A glimpse into the transitional years between Spencer's early songwriting days as a teenager and the release of his first fully-realized album in 2006...
Bio / Background
Spencer Bates always loved to sing. As a film student at Northwestern University, he had never played an instrument, but Spencer's underlying passion for performing inspired him to teach himself to play the piano, chord by chord, day by day, and to begin writing his own music. His first self-produced demo, "Everybody has a Song," received modest exposure and was favorably reviewed on a number of websites, ultimately attracting the attention of mixer/producer Chris Trevett. Together, they produced the "Back to School EP Demo," an early preview of Spencer's approach to his first fully-realized album, "Goodnight Rosebud", released in early 2006. Although he has a style all his own, Spencer has already been compared to Elton John and Billy Joel. As male singer/songwriters come back into style, Spencer, armed with his piano, instead of a guitar, fills an obvious void in the mainstream.
↓ more ↓The depth, wit, and insight of Spencer's constantly evolving songwriting allow him to stand out as a voice from his generation with still much to say. Today, the Chevy Chase, Maryland native is playing at East coast colleges, in addition to the regular shows he has in piano bars across the Baltimore/Washington metro area.
- This demo's recording of Spencer's song "Let It Slide" was chosen a Washingtonpost.com "Editor's Pick" in the pop genre in 2003.
