Quirky story-telling style of songwriting delivered with expressive voice accompanied by a small band featuring Patrick Bartel on acoustic guitar.
Bio / Background
Soressa Gardner (born and residing in Vancouver, B.C., Canada) began performing her songs with collaborator and guitarist Patrick Bartel in 1995, and since then her musical career has branched in new directions. Scabs and Dressings, released in 2000, showcases the second stage of her earlier style: solid songwriting with quirky content delivered in a folk-pop style with emotive, golden coloured vocals. The album features Patrick Bartel (acoustic guitar), Russell Sholberg (upright bass) and Joel Lower (percussion). Soressa’s first album, Standing Still Running, released in 1996, flirts with a full band rock format. Both albums received airplay on public, co-op and college radio. Soressa has no fear of stories with unhappy endings - she juxtaposes beautiful melodies with weighty lyrics, lending a sometimes haunting, sometimes humourous edge to her performances. Influences include Veda Hille, Mary Margaret O’Hara, Tori Amos and Lisa Germano.
↓ more ↓Since the mid 90’s, Soressa has become an accomplished vocal improviser, often bringing her laptop into the mix for live electronic processing. She has a diploma in classical voice from Vancouver Community College and is currently completing a music degree with a focus on composition.
Soressa’s recent electronic soundscapes reflect her experience as an improvising vocalist. Her compositions often feature the human voice, manipulated through vocal and electronic means. Her work has been showcased at Video Inn’s Signal and Noise Festival and at the Western Front. As an improvising performer, she has worked with Mascall Dance and others, providing a mix of vocals and electronics. Most recently she has completed an Artist in Residence position at Vancouver Co-op Radio sponsored by the MAC (Media Arts Committee) and the Canada Council for the Arts .Soressa performs with Helsinki 8, BODAC, the VCMI Alumni group and others, including Eye of Newt, and Vancouver New Music’s project based community ensembles.
