Biography
This East Village NYC Garage/Blues combo inauspiciously began as a duo when PhilthyPhil McCune and Tom Howard, upon the breakup of their old band The Hypno-Twists, moved from Phoenix, AZ to New York City. Armed with some demos they recorded in a warehouse and their kitchen, they shipped them off to famed producer Michael Deming (Pernice Brothers, Neal Casal, Lilys, Beachwood Sparks) who agreed to record a 6 song EP with them. This produced “Prepared For That Eventuality” which was released in early 2005. After playing shows from the East Village to East London, the band took some time off. Upon return in 2006, the band started gigging around the Lower East side as a full-fledged 4-piece and preparing songs for a new recording. In October 2006, with Simon DeGeorges on drums and Mr.
↓ more ↓Alessandro on bass, the band recorded their first full-length LP, “Alphabet City Sunrise” in 5 days. The band, bored with albums where every song songs exactly the same, decided to mix a bit of blues, rock & roll, motown , folk, and psych, and roll it into one. While having a bit of everything, the album remains cohesive.
Throughout the Sons history, they have done multiple tours of England, including gigs opening for The Soledad Brothers, The Kills and Mr. David Viner. They've been trapped over night above the Jailhouse in Coventry, forced to bring their own JD to London because of the diminutive pours there, and have drunk (and been drunk) in NYC with Lenny Kaye, Sylvain, Ryan Adams and John Spencer. Dedicated to the theory of playing live as full on entertainment, Sons of Moon take the stage dressed to the 9's, maybe even the 10's, and come complete with light show extravaganza and energized bodies in motion. The sound is somewhere in the middle of The Yardbirds, The Rolling Stones, Brian Jonestown Massacre, Kinks, Syd Barrett, Chuck Berry, Howlin' Wolf and Jimi Hendrix turned up to 11!, yet it's still somehow their own. With a lot more experience under their belt and a new album under their arm, Sons of Moon are now ready to take it to the next level.
