Bio / Background
Name: Evon Haltaftahyde Lindsay
Place of birth: Clarenton, Jamaica
Growing up in the hills of Jamaica, the last baby born to James and Linda Ann Lindsay , I fell in love with singing at a very young age. It was because my mother was such a great singer and sang quite often around the house. I was the baby and very close to my mother so I enjoyed the words of many spiritual hymns she would sing.
After leaving high school I continued my education in the Job Force Ministry of Agriculture for 2 years as a volunteer assistant field officer in the Self- Supported Farmer Program. From there I joined the military and served the Jamaica Defense Force (JDF) for six years. Shortly after joining the military at the age of nineteen my mother passed away.
My family remained tightly bonded and enjoyed coming together and hearing the beat of good reggae music. Several of my nephews were owners of disco clubs.
↓ more ↓During my leave from the military I would visit my nephews at the disco and perform for most of their shows and parties. At this point, I also was inspired to write my own lyrics.
I became involved in the community affairs where I lived. There I met some friends and we started a group by the name of Roots Umoja. Our first show was greatly supported by the community and outside businesses. About two or three years later the band broke up but this did not steal my dream for singing.
I received the opportunity to sing with several groups. They included The Walers, Culture, Mighty Diamonds, Burning Spears and Steel Pulse, which allowed me exposure in the states of Virginia, New York, Philadelphia and Baltimore
In 1990 I relocated to Baltimore, Maryland and established my own family business with the name given "A Taste of Ocho Rios". Our specialty was in Caribbean cuisine, American dishes and of course, the sound of music playing for everyone.
Many new people were met after the opening of the business and opportunities for my music to be performed opened as well. After meeting city officials, radio announcers and just who to know, I received the opportunity to perform during the city's Festivals, Stones Soul Picnics and at other community events.
I have met many struggles but I survived. My music basically expresses my deep love for family and good people. You will find the music to be a mixture of Reggae, Rap, Spiritual, RB and also with an universal connection.
