Bio / Background
"An American Song" is the new CD from Rob Sobol, released on Proteus Records. Rob is the former SocialVoyeurs singer/songwriter (StarSearch winner from Philadelphia - VH1 not Andy Warhol type), heard on WYSP, WMMR, ABC, NBC, and USA Networks. The CD was recorded at Indre Studios in Philadelphia, where such artistic luminaries as the Dave Mathews Band, Creed and Billy Joel have recorded and which regularly hosts radio shows for WXPN (the World Café), Y100 (Sonic Sessions) and WYSP. Mike Richelle was the engineer.
The haunting lyrics and melodies of "An American Song" are brought to stunning life by the voice and piano of Rob Sobol. This unadorned yet powerful recording harkens back to Rob's classical training yet looks forward to a new fusion of emotional songwriting with the new sounds of a writer and singer influenced by artists as diverse as Aaron Copeland, Annie Lennox, and Bruce Springsteen.

From the foreboding yet redemptive ("An American Song,") to the imagined first person account of Elian Gonzales' struggles ("A Mother's Arms"), and from the reworking of the SocialVoyeurs' Starsearch winning tune into an almost Gorillaz-type song that says you can never go back but you can go forward ("1977 (Free Zone)") to the pleading Peter Gabrielesque ("Please Don't Stop Now"), Rob Sobol's new effort is amazing in its depth, breadth and refreshing simplicity.
As the VH1 television feature, "Before They Were Stars" makes clear, other artists like Rob Sobol have appeared in a past life on StarSearch and later were driven to achieve great commercial success (Alanis Morrisette, Britney Spears, LeAnn Rimes, Christina Aguilera, Destiny's Child, and Aaliyah, among many others). Rob Sobol will be one more name to add to the list of those who have graduated into the world of widespread recognition and commercial success. It only takes one listen to "An American Song" to become convinced.
Rob says:
An American Song is everything I've wanted to say, all in one place. The world can be a harsh place, but the sun sometimes peaks through the clouds and makes us all want to sing. After losing my mother, 9/11, losing friends along the way to AIDS and suicide, and struggling as a child with a difficult illness, I thought I had something to share with everyone else here on this planet that could help chart a path through. Pop music can be a great way to join with people to let them know many of us have the same feelings and hopes. That is the kind of music I want to continue to share for a very long time.
If you like Five for Fighting, Peter Gabriel, Ben Folds Five, Cat Stevens, Elton John and Roger Waters, you'll love "An American Song." Buy it now at www.cdbaby.com. Play it loud.
