A warm, subtle, transcendent mood-based recording. An unique and emotive voice with a landscape of warm guitars, rhodes, hammond and evocative songwriting
Bio / Background
Originating from the south-west coast of Western Australia, Simon London's musical direction has been forged on the same hard-earned turf as some of Australia's most successful independent roots musicians. With his band the Spirits, he's travelling and playing the same circuit that brought revered acts like the Waifs and the John Butler Trio into our consciousness. His latest offering - 'Simon London + the Spirits' is further testament to the exciting groundswell of roots-inspired music emanating from this fertile south-western corner.
Since the release of band's self-titled debut album in 2004, Simon London + the Spirits have been making strong impressions on the nations' music industry and music appreciators alike. Critics have been quick to praise both the recordings and live shows, radio has supported the album's singles with airplay around the nation and the band's live show, toured from west to east, continues to leave a groundswell of believers in its wake.
↓ more ↓Either performing solo or with his band, London has supported a diverse range of artists in the last 12 months. Whether it be joining the warm 'roots' of the Waifs for national tour dates or the harder 'rock' of JJJ favourites 67 Special in Melbourne, the live shows continue to garner praise and respect across the whole genre while the band consistently tours to promote the new album.
Both singles 'Flowers' and 'When We Were Young' taken from the album have been supported by many radio stations across the country.
To record the album, London enlisted the help of long-time compadre, producer Dave Parkin (Halogen, Red Jezebel, The Hampdens) and used feel, mood and emotion as the only yardsticks of measurement in aspiring to create an honest and worthy album.
Aided by his gifted band, London has achieved this by constructing a truly sublime release praised by critics and well loved by the band's appreciators.
Various critics have said different things, perhaps best summed up by Neil Wedd from the respected INPRESS Melbourne: "Simon London and the Spirits came on from WA and just blew the crowd away...Simon London is a brilliant vocalist, with a very distinctive voice that has touches of Alex Lloyd and echoes of Paul Dempsey. It is a voice made for radio. It resonates and has a big range. When backed up by the matching voices from the Spirits it makes you shiver... Simon delivers his vocals with passion, standing on his toes to sing, straining to get the song out. You can feel the desire. The band help amplify the message...Intelligent players who love playing. ....This band has all it takes to be a success, the songs, the voice, the performance".
