Bio / Background
Here on the Northwest Coast
By Sherry Flanigan
Here on the Northwest Coast is a CD with twelve original songs. These songs reflect the experience of living on the Olympic Peninsula in Washington State. The Olympic Peninsula is a unique region on the northwest coast of the United States. Beautiful, wild, and rich in culture, the Olympic Peninsula attracts and sustains independently minded people.
Many of the songs tell stories about these people and the places on the peninsula they love. "The Color of the River" tells the story of an artist who lives on a homestead near the Hoh River. The peninsula's beauty inspires many to pursue art, and the artist in this song has painted her family's portraits along with the scenery around them. "The River Hoh" describes what one would see if they traveled through the valley formed by this river, and the peace and contentment one finds when they've found the place of their dreams.
↓ more ↓"I Know Why This is Home" and "Here on the Northwest Coast" are both songs about the sense of place one can develop here.
"The Fiddler's Songs" was written after a friend tore down an old, rickety building on her property. The structure started to sway after a windstorm and seemed to present a danger to the local children who played around it. After it was torn down, many of the older residents in the area asked her, "Why did you tear down the old grange hall?" It seems there were legendary dances held long ago. Loggers who danced there fondly remembered the old grange hall.
All of these songs are richly accompanied by some of the finest northwest musicians. You'll hear Rick Ruskin on guitar, Greg Scott singing a beautiful duet with Sherry Flanigan, and Bob Tabscott and his dobro infusing Sherry's music with his distinctive flair. Vivian Williams plays violin on many songs and Mark Graham's harmonica is hauntingly beautiful. This CD was recorded at Lion Dog Music Studio in Seattle and produced by Rick Ruskin and Sherry Flanigan.
