After 4 years of intense study, he returned the east coast in 1988 and fronted various jazz groups playing his original compositions as well as playing guitar with assorted singer/songwriters on the scene. While he had always been writing his own songs, it was not until 1999 that he finally came full circle, back to some of his original inspirations and began to put together the Bob Sharkey Songs Quartet. The sound was an instant and unique blend of his jazz background and the songwriters that inspired him to pick up the guitar in the first place. With Fil Krohnengold on Wurlitzer and Moog, Dan Green on bass and Jeff Lipstien on drums, all exceptional talents with whom he had played with over the years in different bands on the scene.

The first CD was recorded in 2000. Recorded live in one day with just a few more sessions of overdubs, 8 songs were produced and the first CD, simply titled "Bob Sharkey Songs Quartet" was complete. The sound was instantly defined and completely it's own. Using these recordings as a blueprint, the band made it's home at The Living Room on the Lower East Side of Manhattan and began to develop it's live sound. Taking full advantage of the jazz and rock backgrounds of it's members, the shows contained the kind of improvisations more closely associated with jazz while never losing sight of the context in which they we're playing, the context of songs with lyrics, and melody and structure. Initial tracks for the follow up CD were recorded in early 2002 but it was not until December 2004 that the CD was finally finished. So now, finally, comes the follow up by the Bob Sharkey Quartet titled "Foolish Nightmare". The palette has definitely widened but the rich mix of jazz, folk and rock remains true...
