A Jazz/Latin/Funk band with tight horns, a killer rhythm section and great arrangements - both originals and clever new takes on familiar jazz standards.
Bio / Background
Due to a variety of factors, many musical groups in L.A. find it difficult or impossible to develop much cohesiveness in the sound, a quality which only comes from rehearsal, focus on the underlying meaning of the music, and other things which require deeper involvement by players than surface-level skills.
I was impressed with SGS right from the beginning. I heard their first CD, which really has some nice things on it, and then I learned that they had recorded it live, right in their own rehearsal room at Brenda’s house. This told me that SGS was a group with focus and commitment to their sound, and that they had taken the time to really dig into the music. The music itself was varied, often challenging, but also soulful. The sound was clean, but not over-produced. I noted also that their music was at times unusual and quirky and not just created to fit into a pre-sold market.
↓ more ↓Unlike many performing groups, SGS is unique due to a variety of things: focus, leadership, hard work, and dedication by the core members, and smart management of resources. It is unusual to find a true instrumental group which has both high musical standards and the work ethic necessary to produce a really tight, believable, personal sound. SGS has achieved this beautifully on Blame It On Trio!
