The Serfs accordion driven rock features the masterful technique and colorful original compositons of Gary Sredzienski. The Serfs call their distinctive sound, "Ethnic / Instrumental Rock & Xtreme Polkas."
Bio / Background
They met 15 years ago at Polish Wedding. Gary Sredzienski was the "strolling accordionist" ... they were a surf and rockabilly band. WHAT NOW!
The Serfs play Ethnic /Instrumental Rock & Xtreme Polkas. Accordion driven Rock 'n' Roll. Featuring some real old songs, and the compositions of an accordion virtuoso of many styles of Eastern European folk styles, and early American music, who waited a long time to Rock 'n' Roll.
In the liner notes Sredzienski (shred-JIN-skee) says:
"Where I grew up you didn't play Rock on the accordion. It was done in secret. Accordionists were even expelled from the Folk Mass. With Lawrence Welk and the Beatles nailing the coffin shut, the accordion nearly became extinct, as if wiped out by a virus from Outer Space."
Today the Serfs draw on a large array of Old World musical traditions, and proudly, and boldly go where few believe the accordion belongs!
In 2003 the Serfs won Best Alternative Band in the Seacoast NH (USA) Spotlight Awards.
↓ more ↓Gary also received the Spotlight Award for Special Achievement for being an artist who puts his art, and the entertainment of others - especially seniors - above his own personal gain.
The Serfs are Gary Sredzienski on accordion, and two former members of the NH Seacoast favorites 'Tongue and Groove', Jamie Decato on drums, and brother Chris Decato on guitar, and the Beach Cowboy in the band is Jim Taylor on the electric bass.
The Serfs have developed a very unique and inventive sound. The Serfs remind you of old time New England barn dance music, or what Gypsy's might sound like with a rocking rhythm section. Serf to www.theSerfs.com.
Gary is a NH state artist-in residence, he has represented the Granite State, performing at both the Smithsonian Folk Life Fest, and the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, D.C. He has traveled to Romania, as part of a U.S. State Department-sponsored cultural tour. He has performed at the Texas Folk Life Festival, and last year at the Lowell Folk Festival.
As a www.wunh.org volunteer for more than 16 years, Gary is the longtime Saturday morning host of "The Polka Party" radio show. Keeping the spirit of old-time radio alive, he gives listeners great music, and song, humorous dedications, and a reason laugh and dance around the house each Saturday morning. With every show he imparts a cultural history lesson about the traditions of Poland and Eastern Europe worth listening to, and learning from. You can find out more at Gary's traditional music web site at www.GarySred.com.
... it's an accordion, with a voice that you heard once in a dream ... were you in a love? ... no! ... maybe it was a James Bond movie you saw once ... or some old Thunderbirds reruns ... perhaps the soundtrack of your life!
