Hand-crafted songs with poetry-based lyrics plucked out on a classical guitar.
Bio / Background
"The ocean has no silly names, the ocean has no add campaigns, the ocean has no claim to fame, the ocean soaks up all this pain." Mother nature is number one and Chelsea Lynn La Bate will daringly promote her along with other subjects such as self-discipline, non-violence, blissed out devotion, lucid thinking, self-preservation and blossuming beauty, to a world that falls sick to material excess, unleashed cravings and mental illnesses.
In the track, these stones, Chelsea sings in a modest tone, "these stones, these stones we throw could build, could build our homes" poetically pinpointing that the power of our anger and violence can be redirected for sweeter outcomes.
In her second album, Cardboard Crowns (soon to be released), Chelsea billows "picking through the pawn shop of your dusty thoughts/the film reels of your mind are fearing dry rot," her voice growing from a cozy quiet, to a storm like wind.
↓ more ↓In her song entitled "drink me instead" Chelsea's intonation is unrefined, raw, and bare, akin to the gritty records of Billie Holiday. Here the lyrics paint the fictional picture of caring for an alcoholic. She laments "I'm finally home to find your bones draped like a receiver hung from its phone."
In "You only Come around on Wednesdays" Chelsea sings "the pads of your lips are a lazy boy to your mustache" in a voice that has the quality and texture of aged wine and the grit of old 8mm home movies. Her lyrics, by far the forte of her creations, have been compared to the works of Joni Mitchell.
Chelsea's first album "Lip to Lip, Dust to Chalk," introduces a voice that transmits the intimacy and introverted nature of Ben Harper's Welcome to the Cruel World. This debut record delivers a mesmerizing presentation of finger picked guitar layered under Chelsea's mystical voice. At times the guitar is barely touched, others it is rippling like a harp. Her songs and performances take the listener into a quiet place, a place that soothes but stimulates. Chelsea Lynn La Bate makes songs that open the heart.
Chelsea has been actively performing in the New York City area at venues such as the Knitting Factory, Rockwood Music Hall, 169 Bar, the Stain, Bar 4, Matchelss and Sidewalk Cafe.

I think I could lose myself quite easily in the music. Her voice is crisp yet rough, and the guitar in there is just wonderful.
