progressive rock. of course, heavily influenced by the titans of the past, but with a view to the future and some originality of our own - at least we hope so
Editorial review
If you like early, Peter Gabriel-led Genesis, chances are the debut album from San Francisco progressive-rock band Metaphor will have something on it worth slobbering over. Other than John Mabry's vocals, which are solid but don't recall Gabriel's much at all, Starfooted -- the San Francisco band's debut album, and only the second release on Swiss progressive label Galileo -- has all the qualities, quirks, and flourishes of Genesis circa The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway. That's not at all surprising considering they began their career in 1993 as a classic-era Genesis cover band before gravitating to their own, like-minded original material a few years later. Characteristically, then, complexity is a requirement, and complexity is exactly what Metaphor provides -- in their playing, in their song structures, and in their lyrics. You have to give the band credit for their chutzpah. Their pretensions, like most teenagers' hormones, are working overdrive on Starfooted. To call the album a concept album is to hugely understate the fact. Other than the lack of multiple voices, it wouldn't be a stretch to call it a rock opera of sorts. Each song is actually a part or section of the whole (and is divided up as such in the CD booklet), and each is part of a dialogue, generally between two or more individuals, with some of the characters involved being a Narrator, the Snake, Eve, the Prophet, and Christ. So Metaphor has ambition in spades (which is one reason why it is a bit disappointing that their music isn't a bit more stylistically ambitious, falling back on the normal prog-rock templates). There is a plot, but it is so hopelessly dense and buried under literary pretension that it is next to impossible to ferret out. On the music end of things, inspirations other than Genesis -- Rush, Yes, Gentle Giant, Jethro Tull, and so on -- are also discernible throughout. Having said all that, the playing is uniformly excellent, and quite often the band find an intriguing groove or lock into a gorgeous ensemble section that is proof of their abilities. In the end, it is their sensibilities and influences that win out though. If you close your eyes and allow the music to take you away, and forget that you are listening to San Francisco band at the beginning of the 21st century rather than a British band at the beginning of the 1970s, there is plenty to enjoy about Starfooted. Or to put it another way, if you are able to dismiss the sheer retroism of the band and its album, set aside the irony of the music industry's continued insistence on categorizing music this tried-and-true by the label "progressive," and dive guilt-free into the grandiosity of it all, Starfooted is a fine album. ~ Stanton Swihart, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
it seems unlikely that an idyllic but totally obscure country-side region at the utmost western border of germany called "eifel" (sometimes refered to as the "siberia of germany") should spawn a progressive rock outfit. nevertheless, singer and guitarist thomas thielen, drummer martin walter and keyboardist udo gerhards met there while playing from 1994-1997 in the wildly unknown progressive rock group "powds con fusion". after "powds" imploded for a number of reasons, thielen, walter and gerhards decided to keep on musicking together and went on the lookout for a bass player. soon they found ingo roden who had been turning down offers by other local bands because he wanted to do something "more adventurous": he found exactly what he was looking for in "scythe".
↓ more ↓they began to write and rehearse material, preparing live work as well as the recording of their first self-produced demo cd "each other" which was released early in 1999 and was received very well internationally by fans and critics. encouraged by the success of "each other", in the spring of the year 2000 the band set out to record their first official album, titled "divorced land". "divorced land" features professional re-recordings of several cuts from "each other" as well as more than 40 minutes of new material. impressed by the strength of the material presented, we offered to release "divorced land" internationally. it will be available in february 2001. "divorced land" has been mastered by the renowned and award-winning mastering engineer bob katz. the cover art has been designed by the swiss company "blackflame".
apart from recording "each other" and "divorced land", "scythe" have played a number of live live gigs as well, among them appearances at the german prog festivals "monsters of prog #2", "progparade" and "progparade #2".
scythe play what they themselves call "symphonic progressive rock with an edge". the band draw from a wide variety of influences without one of them dominating their compositional approach. therefore their sound remains fresh and original while at the same time recalling the great days of "progressive rock". some favorites of the band members are: king crimson, genesis, yes, soft machine, marillion, peter hammill, magma, the beatles, frank zappa, peter gabriel, the cure, mike oldfield, jethro tull, brian eno, mahavishnu orchestra, radiohead, present, motorpsycho, chick corea, john coltrane, astor piazzolla, return to forever.

PLAY THIS MUSIC LOUD or even better, while sitting in an 18th century rocking chair with your face to a brownish, orange wall with thin green stripes on it (no dots!), having just arrived back from a 12 ½ day-holiday in south-eastern bulgaria (romania does the job, too), chewing a gum /any fruit flavour except banana) backwards whilst thinking about may, 28th, 1827 (about dinner time), for best results, earplugs should be removed first.
