Bio / Background
Scott Smith has been a fixture on the South Carolina entertainment scene since 1994, and has been featured regularly at the House of Blues in North Myrtle Beach, opening for national artists such as Keb’ Mo, the Neville Brothers and Better than Ezra. His contagious vocal style and funk/blues acoustic guitar work establish the original pocket that Smith has carved out for himself. The birth of his son took him up to Cleveland in 2003 where he quickly established an audience and a schedule of regular performances.
During his three year stay in Cleveland, Scott Smith endeared himself to both local audiences and local musicians across Northeast Ohio. Among these was Cleveland Singer-Songwriter Joe Rohan. Rohan and Smith met at a songwriter’s night in 2003 where they immediately struck up a contagious musical rapport and chemistry.
↓ more ↓Since then, the two artists have continued to collaborate both on the stage and in the studio as well as touring together between Ohio and South Carolina.
This musical camaraderie eventually led them to Curt Leonard’s (Buddy Miles, Third Wish) studio, The Playroom (North Ridgeville) where Rohan recorded his 2005 release. With Rohan and Leonard co-producing, Smith began recording his long overdo solo debut Quicksand Remedies which hit the streets in December 2006.
“Quicksand Remedies “ showcases Smith’s soul driven musical style that comfortably walks the intersection of pop-hop, reggae and funk with small doses of Smith’s instrumental work. The driving force of each song is spontaneity, soul and sincerity which give the music an almost universal cross genre appeal. Lyrically, Smith reminisces with a quirky poetic style about a life that has brought bliss, hard times, heartache, and everything in between.
Songs on Quicksand Remedies range from full production arrangements to stripped down acoustic numbers, even a song called, “Pocket” that was recorded in Smith’s car at 3am after a long night. “The focus of this album was to capture the vibe of each song,” says producer Joe Rohan. “This sometimes meant bringing in a horn section and sometimes putting up one mic and getting it live. That’s what happens when you go to see Scott live, Spontaneity. A unplanned,
Yet clever balance of structure with some breathing room for improve give the album a nice open feel.
Smith will continue to perform in venues from Charleston, South Carolina to
Cleveland, Ohio in support of his new album and his habit of eating. Expect to
