"A World To Win: Songs from the Struggle for Global Justice" is the first release of political folk music from Toronto artist Sara Marlowe. On this inspiring first solo album you will be treated to a mix of musical styles spanning jazz, folk and alternative. Sara and her band are all accomplished artists who have shared the stage with performers such as Anne Feeney, David Rovics, Chris Brown, Evalyn Perry, Dope Poets Society, Ron Hawkins and Bruce Cockburn. "A World to Win" was selected as one of the Top 10 Releases of 2002 by 'HarrisRadio' in New York City. Sara is featured in the latest video by the Toronto Video Activist Collective about the anti-G8 protest in Calgary, Alberta. The CD has also been getting radio play in both Canada and the United States and hit #13 on the college charts.
Sara's writing is edgy and insightful. On this album, she covers many current issues of global concern. Such tracks like This is What Democracy Looks Like about the April 2001 anti-FTAA protests in Quebec City or Blood on Your Hands dealing with sanctions and war on Iraq are passionate and meaningful examples of Sara's ability to converse with an audience.
Sara Marlowe is a Toronto based singer/songwriter and political activist. Sara plays both as a solo performer as well as with a full back-up band. The full band includes backing vocals, Djembe, bass, guitar, flute and congas. They play at various demonstrations, political events including the bioDiversity picnic with David Suzuki, International Women's Day and Dec. 6th, the ani-G8 protests in Alberta, and band venues around Southern Ontario.
Michelle Denis, Djembe player and back-up vocalist, is involved in acting, music, theater, occasional radical cheerleading and political activism. Dan Holowachuk, conga and kit player, is a music graduate from the Mohawk College jazz program and has been playing for years both in Toronto and around the world. Brian Champ, bass player, has been a musician and songwriter, as well as political activist for many years. Deb Scanlon, flute player, is also an avid environmentalist. The band strives to create a reflective atmosphere while also playing tunes to invite people just to get up and dance.
