Bio / Background
In the Craig Russo Latin Jazz Project, we blend jazz standards with Afro-Caribbean rhythms into a fresh mix of styles. This unique group features the very best regional musicians, drawing heavily on the rich music community in Champaign-Urbana, Illinois and the University of Illinois. Musicians currently with the group include:
Craig Russo (Drums,Congas) - A Latin percussionist and drumset artist with a strong interest in Afro-Cuban music, Craig has traveled several times to Cuba to study at the National School of Arts in Havana. He also has 20 years of experience playing mainstream jazz with various groups in the Midwest and East Coast.
Chip McNeill (Tenor Saxophone) - Chip is nationally recognized as both performer and educator, especially through long associations with Maynard Ferguson and Arturo Sandoval. Chip is currently Director of Jazz Studies at University of Illinois, Champaign-Urbana.

Jeff Helgesen (Trumpet)- Jeff is former featured trumpet player with the Ray Charles Orchestra. He now freelances as a studio musician and clinician, as well as leading several
ensembles of his own.
Douglas Little (Alto Saxophone)- Currently based in Minneapolis, Doug has performed at festivals and clubs throughout the world as leader of his own group and as member of The Motion Poets. He received the prestigious McKnight Fellowship in 1998 and, more recently, a Jerome Foundation grant to study music in Cuba.
Sean Parsons (Piano) - Sean is a versatile pianist, trombonist and composer who is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Jazz Studies at University of Illinois. Sean maintains a busy schedule as both performer and educator.
Toby Curtright (Bass) - Toby is currently pursuing a Doctorate in Jazz Studies at the University of Ilinois, Champaign-Urbana. He frequently works as a guest artist and educator at universities and festivals throughout the region, as well as maintaining a busy schedule as one of the area's premier bassists.
Jeff Magby (Drums, Congas) - Jeff is one of the region's most in-demand musicians. After completing Bachelor and Masters degrees in percussion performance, Jeff settled in Urbana, IL, where he maintains a busy schedule teaching and performing a wide variety of music styles.
