"The King is Dead" (Ruby Vileos) features the strong vocal style of Ali Edwards with textures of guitar and keyboard/sound samples. Great songs featuring Ass Ponys' Bill Alletzhauser and Dave Morrison along with Edwards.
Bio / Background
Bio:
Ruby Vileos formed in 1998 when singer/songwriter Ali Edwards joined forces with Bill Alletzhauser and Dave Morrison (Ass Ponys). Morrison departed in 2001 at which time Victor Strunk and Todd Drake came on board to complete the lineup. The band spent the past few years honing their unique sound and live show, while supporting their debut release, The King Is Dead, which received copious amounts of airplay around the US and Canada. The song Big Gun landed on WOXY's "97 Best of 2001" and the band won "Best New Artist" at the Cincinnati Entertainment Awards that same year.
In 2003, Ruby Vileos entered Ultrasuede Studio with engineer/producer John Curley (Afghan Whigs) to begin work on a new full-length cd. Recording sessions at Ultrasuede, combined with recording at the band's home studio, resulted in the sophomore effort, This is the Day, released on May 1, 2004.
Mike Breen of Cincinati City Beat writes: "The group...
↓ more ↓make the tracks lush and often hypnotic, crafting subtle layers of keyboard and sample quirks and brash guitar riffs. To top it off, the songs exhibit an impressive Pop flair and the textures dance gracefully with irresistible melodies. The music's experimental qualities never overwhelm the actual heart of the song, which is refreshing. Highlights abound.... Just fantastic stuff."
Tom Becker in Privy Magazine writes: "Alison Edwards'... voice has that resonating quality and earnestness that will turn more than a few heads.... There is some really good sound here. The second track "New Ghost" is flavored with a sweet electronica pulse that deserves to be a bit more unleashed. PERFIDIOUS (#7), gives Edwards the room to do her thing but also gives the musicians the chance to drive a song with strong chord changes and excellent percussion. More good stuff is found on the first track FACE IS NOT YOUR FACE, which starts with a Riverside-esque driven bass line and rhythm guitar, amounting to a nice cruising, head-bobbing tune. Edwards takes charge on the 5th track UN-MAKING FRIENDS, a tune where if you close your eyes, you swear you can actually here the rain tapping the window on a cold March morning. And she deserves the space to make a song her own, because the talent is here." (www.privymagazine.com/ruby_vileos.html)
