Bio / Background
"There once were a people of blood that ran strong
A travelling people of story and song
Who lived their lives true to the wisdom gone by
Who spoke their own words beneath a clear sky
Now those that were young would be rushed off to bed
At night by the fire the pipes could be heard
Twas the sound of the sea and the wind and the rain
On moonfilled nights as the banshee screams
The old folk would tell of the wisdom gone by
The elves and the fairies with their laughter and song
Of the stones of midsummer and the powers within
Of the travelling woman and the places she’s been
Come gather now people at this time honoured place
Down by the hollow beneath the moons face
You don’t need any money for the road is not poor
Come with me and together we’ll travel once more
Leave the stinking black towns of the civilized man
Where the black tar and concrete have strangled the land
Come out to the open road running with me
And together we’ll find what it means to be free
Together we
↓ more ↓’ll find what it means to be free"
(lyrics written by a woman in Dingle, Ireland of a name I will share as soon as I am told)
A brief history of Saoirse - birthed to the name of Kristin Anne Ronne and now renamed in her home of Ireland - now she is named Saoirse Rooney - Saoirse meaning Freedom and Rooney being her blood line proper family name first on her mother's side of course....an even longer story for another time...
SAOIRSE
Gender: Feminine
Usage: Irish
Pronounced: SEER-sha
Means "freedom" in Irish Gaelic.
Saoirse was raised by her mother, of Irish decent, among farmlands of Illinois in a small town called Frankfort Square - but visited often her father in a huge city known as Chicago. These two worlds gave her much to think about and she began to write songs on a little wooden box known as a guitar that her father gave her when she was very young. She began to tell tales of sights she's seen and over the years many things changed.
She loved all the stories of freedom fighters she'd heard and the tales of the womyn who have reminded us to love our mother earth.
She traveled much in search of truth and to find her home.
She followed advice and recorded some songs and began to share them with her friends. Some people traded with her their own music. Some people gave her green paper to trade with and some gave her herbs.
She played in pubs and on streets - wherever she could.
She then met a teacher who told her tales of her motherland - Ireland - and although her ancestors came to the North America for unknown reasons - probably due to opressors stealing all their potatoes so they began to starve - she knew she would have to return.
She then visited her motherland of Ireland - where she was finally given her proper name by her teacher and guide to her native land - her name given was Saoirse meaning freedom - and she took on her mother's birthname - her rightful last name of Rooney.
On this journey she knew she was finally home.
She visited many magical spots in her homeland of Ireland - where ancient druids had been. She sang songs in the mountains with her new friends. They played with her on tin whistles, fiddles, cello, Uilleann pipes, banjo's, flutes, and even bodhran! She was told of the tales of opressors coming in and how peaceful times were brought to an end. She sang her songs with these new friends. Then they sang to her their rebel songs and on this voyage Saoirse began to change.
but here is where some of it began....
...Many of the songs are serious and complex, recalling the music of Jeff Buckley or Tori Amos. Overall, it's an exceptional album with a lot to offer to the listener.
