Contemporary Christian message with a country-blues-rock flavor
Bio / Background
Raised a ‘son of a preacher man’ in a family full of musicians, there are some things in life one can’t escape. Ricky Lee’s destiny was laid out long before he became aware of it. He realized his passion for music at an early age in church services where he found that he could pick out and sing different harmony parts during praise and worship time. Little did he know he was honing his craft in those backwoods churches.
Through the years his musical interests grew in various directions, finally leading him to Music City-Nashville, Tennessee. Doug Phelps, Ricky Lee’s younger brother, was already in Nashville playing bass guitar for a noted country artist but spent his spare time jamming for fun with some good ol’ boys from Kentucky. The brothers soon saw an opportunity to fulfill a lifelong dream of playing music together. Thus, The Kentucky HeadHunters were born. What started out as a fun sideline turned into success, fame and fortune, seemingly overnight.
↓ more ↓The six-year ride with the ‘Heads’ produced two albums, a Grammy, an American Music Award, 4 CMA Awards, 1 ACM and 2 Billboard Awards.
Feeling the need to broaden their musical scope, Ricky Lee and Doug pulled away from the group to launch out on their own. The dynamic duo called Brother Phelps shot out of the gate with a Top 10 single, music video award success and nominations at most of the major award shows, including Duo of the Year from the TNN/Music City News Awards and the Country Music Association. After the release of two albums with Brother Phelps, Ricky Lee decided to leave the duo and pursue other personal life goals.
Since that time, Ricky Lee has spent much of his time raising his son, Eli. Then, just recently, he was reunited and shared wedding vows with a woman who has been his best friend for some 20 years. "Her name is Karen, which means 'Pure of Heart', and that she certainly is", he says. So the family has grown now to include her son, Jeffrey and his daughter, Willow.
He has turned more inwardly in his musical expression these days, no longer being 'caught up' in the hype of the 'biz'. He has been concentrating on song-writing, recording, building a studio and has dabbled in new artist development here and there. Ricky Lee’s latest efforts “Signs Of The Times” and "Full Access" reflects his heart and soul as an artist, to bring forth some of the ’truths’ planted in him from his youth through this moment in his life. He sums this up in his own words, “If I have one song that can change one thought pattern in one person, to their betterment, then I have accomplished my goal; anything more than that is icing on the cake.”
