Bio / Background
The 15 folksongs on XOPO ! originate from Macedonia, Armenia, Finland, Greece, Turkey, Romania, Plovdiv and other places whose names have changed over the years in Eastern Europe. Rom musical social studies gipsy gypsy egypt bellydance belly dancing ethnomusic ethnomusicology international folkdance world music interest here. ALL of these songs have specific regional folk dances that go with them. XOPO means DANCE in Bulgarian.
XOPO Songlist:
1. Tin Aghapi - gypsy belly dance groove, medium 4/4, female vocal, clarinet and balalaika solos - (from
HWY X) - 5:03. This killer live version was recorded at the Harmony Bar.
2. Laz Bar - starts in a medium/fast tempo 7/16 ends in a faster 2/4 time - accordion / instrumental with "Roll out the Barrel" quote in 7/16 - (unreleased, live at the Harmony) - 3:37
3. Iste Hendek by Baris Manco. Turkish rock anthem in 4/4 with male and female vocals, saxophone and big electric violin and guitar solos - (from HWY X) - 6:30.
↓ more ↓This interesting, longer-than-usual version was recorded live at Witz End. Lovely dual-line dance to this one.
4. Veselinovo Horo (Dance of Veselinovo) - 4/4 time instrumental with sax and electric mandolin solos - (unreleased) 4:50
5. Dada Sali (Grandpa Sali) - 4/4 dance groove instrumental with sax, trumpet and electric violin solos - (from
HWY X) - 8:02. Live at the Harmony again.
6. Bucimis a 15/16 time showpiece instrumental sprinkled with Smetana's Moldau (aka the Israeli National Anthem, Hatikva) and the Mexican Hat Dance - (from Iguana iguana - 3:20. Harmony live. It was a really good night.
7. Gankino Horo an instrumental with female spoken vocals, in a faster, hypnotic 11/16 time - (from Iguana iguana - 6:43. Live from the Barrymore Theater.
8. Siroon Agcheek (Sweet Girl) - female vocal, electric mandosynth and saxophone solos - 5:18. Live from the Harmony Bar & Grill. Features a great hand-holding circle dance. Gypsy / bellydance groove.
9. Pruga - an instrumental (trumpet, clarinet and violin) in 4/4 time, medium dance tempo but gets faster - 3:40. Live at the Harmony Bar. The POLKA is just one dance that works great with this tune. It sounds like a polka, but it's actually a Hungarian UCEST.
10. Kochari - medium 4/4 instrumental with drumkit, mando and sax solos - 3:08. Harmony Bar, thanks to Lonya and Lance! The studio version of this tune leads off RPO's newest album, "We know you know."
11. Rumelaj (pronounced "room-el-eye") - gypsy bellydance groove tune, male harmony and female lead vocals, violin and clarinet solos - (from On the Wings of a Skink) - 7:18. This is from a recent show in Traverse City, MI, and is a very dirty song when translated. Luckily, not many folks speak the ancient Romany Gipsy language the song is sung in...
12. Godecki Cacak - 4/4 dance tempo gets faster, 3 repeats, instrumental (from the now out of print Balkans Without Borders) - 3:23. This one is live from the Memorial Union, indoors. A celebration dance from the village of Godecki, we use this tune a lot as a wonderful wedding ceremony recessional. This is a live version of the studio track that was hidden before index 1 on the HWY X cd.
13. Giusevska Rucenica - violin and accordion instrumental showpiece in 7/16 time (from Early Reptile) 2:33. Again, recorded live at the Harmony Bar. Has an amazing dance. The difficulty of the solo enticed the reptillian violinist to join the band. For those interested, this incredible peice is notated in Biff's Creative Improve Method book.
14. Villiruusu - a beautiful waltz from Finland in a medium/slower 3/4 time, male and female vocals, clarinet and trumpet solos (from
HWY X) - 3:55. The male vocal is actually Bill repeating some things in Finnish that his grandparents used to say to him - mostly having to do with how cold it was outside.
15. The Devil Went Down To Plovdiv - with an introduction by Jonathon Winters, perhaps the Reptile's hottest studio out-take is a hootenanny of manic proportions; a schizo version of the Charlie Daniels chestnut -- appropriately modified by the Reptiles in an eastern manner - meets Ludo Kopano, an incredible Clarinet showpiece in 11/16 time also known as "Crazy Dance." In this version, the Devil wins. Or does he? Played live in the studio, this has to be the most interesting, blazing and fun example of the band's unreleased studio work. - 5:47 long and mastered by Trevor Sadler at Mastermind. Appears only in 'hidden' MP3 form on "We know you know."
Instruments you'll hear: Electric violin, electric guitar, trumpet, balalaika, electric 6-string cello, accordion, saxophone, electric mandolin, banjo mandolin, theremin, Eb and Bb clarinets, doumbek (dumbek), world percussion and drums.
