Bio / Background
"If you're lucky, once every couple of years you discover a band or album that stands you on your ear and rearranges your expectations," begins Gary Hizer in the Urban Tulsa Weekly September 21st redecco cover story. Hizer's cover story was immediately followed by an unexpected five-star review from the legendary CD Baby distribution company and front-page placement on the CD Baby website. Fortunately for redecco, it all begins quickly and singer/songwriter Patton is thankful for quick, unexpected reviews with high exposure.
Of course, behind every quick-start success, there is history and for redecco's sole singer/songwriter Randle Patton, the history is long. "Falling at Various Speeds" is the culmination of the last ten years of Patton's life. For a decade, Patton memorized his ideas on his acoustic guitar with seemingly indefinite plans to record a project.
↓ more ↓His plans became solid in the end of the 2003 when he sold some rather large items and invested in a home studio where all of his bare-bones ideas became layered and orchestrated into one cohesive piece.
Patton has written so many songs that he had to make decisions on which ones would be included in his freshman album. His decision was based on diversity "I wanted to make something that covered a spectrum of different styles to have the freedom to pursue those styles in future albums." Fortunately for Patton, his various styles make a "cohesive work" says Hizer, and CD Baby agrees: "From track to track (each one being a winner in itself) one of the most celebrated common denominators is the attention and craft of lush harmonies unfolding into another, blending and bleeding and transforming as they crest."
Again, fortunately for Patton, "Falling at Various Speeds" has been dubbed as the "return of the old-school 'headphones album'" by Hizer which parallels the CD's liner notes that list Patton's various contributions: "Vocals, Guitars, Bass, Keyboards, Glockenspiel, Percussion, and other Sounds you may or may not hear." Though Patton wrote, recorded, played, and produced essentially everything on redecco's "Falling at Various Speeds" he has been joined by talented, professional musicians for live performances: Jason Gilardi (drums) has toured the globe with Hollywood Recording artist Caroline's Spine, best known for their top-twenty single "Sullivan" and has opened for legendary bands such as Aerosmith and KISS. Brian Hall (Guitar and Keyboards) has spent the last seven years involved in the Nashville music scene, and Sean Taylor (Bass) paid his dues touring the nation with Flapjack Cancer Company. In live performances, Patton sings while alternating between the guitar and the piano.
Patton's decision to use the name redecco rather than his own, reflects his nearly self-deprecating nature and when it comes to potential musician-status success, Patton seems stunningly balanced: "I have no inherent need to be a 'rock star' but I make my life in music and if that means that thousands or even millions of people know who I am or who redecco is, I will see that as the ultimate compliment. I've been lucky really early in this release and for that I'm grateful, but regardless of however you want to define success, I will still be here in my studio writing and recording and I'll continue to play live whether it's for five people or 5 trillion (he laughs).... being able to create and play music is 'success' for me."
