Bio:
Raincrow is the musical collaboration (songwriting, recording, performing) of two friends, Hayden Mattingly and Rich Pagen. The story begins in Hudson, Wisconsin in 1992, where they crossed paths while teaching at an environmental education center on the St. Croix River. During the winter of 1992-93, they performed on Sunday afternoons at the El Paso Bar, which was a gathering of snowmobilers all converging to eat smoked salmon, listen to live music, and warm up by guzzling Pabst Blue Ribbon.
In the Summer of 1993, Hayden and Rich went different directions with Hayden moving to Columbia, Missouri to begin a doctoral program studying an endangered fish species, and Rich moving to California to teach at an experiential science program for students from Los Angeles.

In the meantime, Hayden and Dave Wildermuth met and formed a band along with several other friends (including Gina Mattingly) known as the Tumbleweeds. In 1997, Rich came to Columbia to begin a Masters program studying forest songbirds. At that time, Hayden was playing with another band called 'Love Henry', who recorded an album at Rich's studio on High Street (Rich and Hayden each recorded solo projects at that studio during 1998). Hayden left for a temporary teaching job in Cape Girardeau, MO, and upon his return in the summer of 1998, Raincrow really began to come together. Regular shows took place at the Chez Coffeehouse on Hitt Street - initially Hayden and Rich, but later with Dave (on bass and Mandolin), and even occasionally Dave's brother Jim on piano, and Ronny Francois on violin.
In February 1999, Hayden and Rich recorded 'Between Blue Moons', their first album together (though they had played on each other's 1998 solo albums). This title comes from the fact that the recording took place in February 1999 - January and March 1999 were both 'Blue Moon' months (two full moons within a calendar month) - hence, 'Between Blue Moons'. Another occurrence that made that particular period significant was that both Hayden's and Rich's fathers turned 60 in early 1999.
The name Raincrow comes from a nickname for the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, a forest bird. On a hike in Three Creeks Conservation Area south of Columbia, Rich and Hayden heard a cuckoo; and being that Rich was studying birds, and Hayden knew the nickname 'raincrow' from where he grew up, it stuck. Several years later, while visiting in Kentucky, Rich and Hayden saw two cuckoos - one on a hike, and one flying across the road - and it seemed like the birds were there for a reason.
In the summer of 1999, Rich left Columbia for a job studying loons in the Arctic, and later for a teaching position on Catalina Island, California. Hayden also left Columbia at that time, heading first to Kentucky, and later to Tennessee, where he is an assistant professor of biology at Tennessee Tech. Dave also has moved on, in his case to St. Louis.
But Raincrow continues............. During the summer of 2001, Raincrow 'A Part of It' was released - the first album released on CD, rather than cassette, and the first one produced in large quantity. The album consists of songs by Hayden and Rich, some new, and some older songs taken from earlier projects. The CD was released at a show in New Richmond, Wisconsin during December 2001.
Raincrow played two reunion shows in Columbia in December 2002 and, more recently, shows in Cookville, Tennessee and St. Louis, Missouri in 2004.
The next Raincrow CD project is well underway.........
