A combination of heavy metal aggression fused with electronica soundscapes, Ging Ging is, at times, a difficult album to listen to. Singer Betsy Martin's banshee-like wail -- faintly reminiscent of Marianne Faithfull circa Broken English -- and the group's buried lyrics create a near impenetrable aural wall for listeners. Yet, during the album's softer moments, "Regarding Mary" and "There's More" among them, the album does achieve moments of beauty. ~ Steven Kurutz, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Although the Los Angeles-based PURR MACHINE was established in 1996, Betsy & Kevin solidified their reputations with previous endeavors. Frontwoman Betsy Martin utilized her distinctive croon with the seminal Phoenix-formed Caterwaul, a band which released two albums on the IRS label in the '80s. In PURRMACHINE, she writes the lyrics, conceives all of the vocal melodies.
Betsy also contributed vocals to the band Hilt and bunch of songs by the band DRUMATIC. Next up is Kevin Kipnis, PURR MACHINE's bassist, programmer and primary songwriter. He did his time as bassist & composer in the highly acclaimed Los Angeles gothic group Kommunity FK.
On GING GING their debut full length release they create "atmospherica" and ethereal driven rock sound that's more aggressive. But too atmospheric and hypnotic to blend in with the generic guitar crowd. In addition to their riff driven track they also weave together some laid back "Electronica" inspired grooves.
