A multi-genre, alternative classical ensemble combining many styles of jazz, pop, various world music idioms, country, Spaghetti Western and other film music to various 20th century classical and "Avant-garde" styles with wit and humor.
Editorial review
There are a lot of groups out there claiming in some way or another to be "unclassifiable," with a great many of them simply being marginally eclectic rock bands ("we play rock, reggae and funk. Unclassifiable!"). The Prime-Time Sublime Community Orchestra is one group that truly lives up to that description, and their debut album (), will either amaze you or leave you scratching your head in wonder. Maybe both. This music is played by an actual orchestra, ranging from ten to seventy players, and augmented by computers. Kudos to "Instigator" and leader Paul Minotto for the production: it's difficult/impossible to tell where the natural instruments end and computer manipulation begins. The album starts with the wonderfully titled "Holy War in Your Pants," which combines minimalism, lush strings, and marimba, then gets really interesting when the sitar and pedal steel guitar start trading licks. "A Day at the Mall" is an equally disparate melange of styles. Opening with skittering avant-garde piano (almost reminiscent of Conlon Nancarrow) and Native American chanting, the piece then visits a wonderful orchestral theme that George Gershwin would be proud to have written. It then moves into a movement featuring some kind of Asian zither, and back to the Gershwin part. And these are not harsh jump cuts from one style to another ? la John Zorn, these are fully integrated compositions that flow, not a mere cutting and pasting of different styles. And so it continues with banjo, clarinet, country guitar figures, brass fanfares, what sounds like gamelan and sampled cows and advertising all popping up at some point. The group owes at least a spiritual debt to Frank Zappa, one of the early practitioners of this type of pan-musical stew, and that can be heard explicitly in "Erectile Cognitive Bop Bits," whose beginning sounds especially Zappa-esque. Also, the beginning of "Felini's Pickup Truck" is reminiscent of "Project X" from Uncle Meat, with interesting, difficult melodies played by woodwinds over a strummed acoustic guitar before moving into some decidedly stranger territory (this is where the cows and Blue Light Specials come into play). "Invocation and Fanfare of the Tahitian Garbage Fairies" has some nice pseudo-Morricone moments, and yes, garbage trucks. This is avant-garde music, to be sure, but it's avant-garde with a strong and pervasive sense of humor and a clearly defined sense of melody and structure. () is a very strange, brilliant and enjoyable album that should please adventurous listeners with open ears -- very open ears. ~ Sean Westergaard, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
STRINGS, BRASS, PERCUSSION AND....SELTZER BOTTLES?
* Who?
The primeTime sublime Community Orchestra (ptsCO) was formed by Paul Minotto in 2000 to create and perform multi-genre, new music which cannot be defined by any stylistic label or category. Members of the group come from a variety of musical backgrounds including jazz, classical, pop, country and world music. In addition to the strings, brass, woodwinds and percussion, the 5th section of ptsCO is comprised of computers which balance the sound and add another dimension of extramusical ideas. Often electric guitars, synthesizers and other electronic instruments are used as well.
* What?
PtsCO combines many different styles of music with wit and humor. From the most popular mainstream genres such as rock or country music to the less popular styles like Free Jazz or "Avant-Garde" sounds, any and every genre and style of music is an option for their amusing explorations.
↓ more ↓And sometimes nonmusical sounds can be heard as well, like a Ginsu knife commercial under water, farm animals, garbage trucks or other fragments of popular culture.
* Yes, but What Kind Of Music Is It?
Any piece of music might contain a mix of Contemporary Jazz, 60's Rock, Chinese Folk, Polynesian percussion, country music, Spaghetti Western and other film music styles, Muzak, east Indian, Hip-hop to various 20th Century classical styles, 60's R&B, "Avant-Garde", Bossa Nova and various Latin American rhythms, Surf guitar music to whatever. Not taking themselves too seriously, ptsCO fuses these sounds so that the result is something between a pop song, film score, jazz improvisation, cartoon soundtrack and an orchestral suite.
They do not have an answer for "What Kind Of Music Is It?"
* And?
Traditional performance attire is often augmented with costume - Bill Clinton or Elvis Presley can sometimes be found in the violin section. Computer animation and various dramatic lighting effects often enhance a performance.
In addition, ptsCO has been featured on radio stations around the world and their music has been reviewed in numerous publications. They have worked with dance companies and choreographers, most recently with the Star Foster Dance Project in the Philadelphia Fringe Festival, and are currently working on their first music video which will never be seen on MTV.

Did someone tell the spirits of Sun Ra, Jimi Hendrix, Charles Ives and Miles Davis to use Polymeriztion and come back to life as this group? If so, thanks a bunch!
