progressive rock / art rock - dreamful, dark, hard-edged, mystical
Editorial review
Point of Ares' debut showcased an unusual sound that introduced punk textures into the progressive rock landscape. This CD continues in that musical direction, but seems much more refined, showing that the band is honing its craft. The punkish, almost garage band charm is quite a refreshing change from what can at times be a rather sterile musical genre. The prog fan's ear is accustomed to more melodic vocals than some of the punk-oriented, Patti Smith-influenced vocals here; this is the only piece of the puzzle that some may find a little hard getting used to. However, The Sorrows of Young Apollo is still quite an entertaining album. Point of Ares is Karen Michalson and Bill Michalson. ~ Gary Hill, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
To meet Beauty once in a dull gray life and never before and never again is to live in hell. A virulent, hard-edged rock odyssey through the myth cycles of Apollo and Dionysus. Shattered gods, fallen heroes, and music that rocks with tension between reason and passion.
Point Of Ares continues to explode on the hard side of the progressive rock genre. This hard, beautiful, and uncompromising album contains rock paeans to the sun god who watched his lover buried alive because he couldn't bear loving a woman more beautiful than himself, to Dionysus the eternally unrecognized dark in the spaces of Carnival, to Hypatia the last Pagan philosopher who was violently destroyed for her great learning, and to many other figures out of Greek myth and legend.
An extended Homeric rock meditation on the loss of heroes and the meaning of the ancient myths to an age of disbelief. Outstanding!
