Intelligent indie rock with touches of anthemic grandeur and topped with pop sensibilities.
Bio / Background
The Plugs are an emerging talent from Oxford, mixing the raw energy of The Killers, the intimate song-smithery of Elbow, and the anthemic grandeur of Muse. All these qualities are blended into something all of their own – edgy, exciting and new, yet with a sense of “classic” stamped all over them. You may not have heard these songs before, but they touch on something so fundamental that they feel like old friends.
Time and direction are not an exact science, certainly not for The Plugs. The band started life in 2000 when Erik Nielsen and Steve Preston, two keyboard players, got together to produce dance remixes, landing several tracks on international releases. Following this initial success, old friends Spencer Williams and Tom Lee were asked to come and lay down live guitars and drums for some new tracks. The chemistry between the four was immediately obvious, so the bold decision was made to re-work all the existing material as a four-piece live band.
↓ more ↓This meant going back to the start; but when you can feel that much potential, even going backwards can be the right thing to do.
Now three years on from officially becoming a “band”, with several critically acclaimed releases under their belts and extensive gigging across the south of England, The Plugs are now set to cast their net further afield.
The Plugs released their debut EP Extended Play in March 2005, and launched the Wingnut Music Collective (www.wingnutmusic.com) in October 2005. Recording on a full-length album has begun in 2007, and live shows continue throughout the UK.

A lot of potential here in this EP. These 4 tracks capture a definite noughties post 911 feel. The music is accessible, sometimes a little catchy. The overall mood is a little sombre at times. Standout track for me is "Whatever" - an anthem for the times.
