More than 25 years after they conquered Canada, the Pied Pumkin String Ensemble has reunited in their passion for joyful and relevant music. This album is live, the music is made for dancing.
Bio / Background
These recordings of raw pumkin (or, as Joe says, "audio verité"), were chosen from the spring 1999 tour of BC Canada. They are a collection of songs nurtured in hearts over time, grown and growing in the gradens of the Canadian West Coast...filled with image and inspiration in tribute to special people, places and events...from the islands of BC, across (as Rick says), the "Rocky Modal Mountains," to Northern Alberta. If you were there, this recording should bring back fond memories of a fine evening together. If not, may it welcome you to the world of the Pumkin.

2.
↓ more ↓Lotus Eaters Blues (written by Rick Scott)
Written in a whisky club in Tokyo. Just tryin' to put some funk into the land of Fuji. If BB King was a white man with a dulcimer, he would have written this. Featuring Rick on vocals, with dulcimer, fiddle, and guitar.
3. Lox and Breakdowns instrumental (written by Joe Mock)
A European flavored fiddle tune, performed in a traditional style in a minor( key, with occassional glimmering modulation into a major motif. The fiddle is featured with dulcimer and guitar background.
4. Cuckoo
A traditional tune turned orange and pumkin-ized. Featuring Rick on vocals, with dulcimer, fiddle, and guitar.
5. Orville Goes To The Country (written by Rick Scott)
A folk opera, a comedy of truths about urban and rural living. Rick and Shari sing the story, with dulcimer, fiddle, and guitar. And don't miss Shari's brilliant gargling solo.
6. Turning ballad (written by Shari Ulrich)
Featuring the "dulcimer army" (duel dulcimers), guitar, and Shari's voice, Turning tells of the need to stay connected to the source of creative inspiration and of the daily vow to do better.
7. Black Dog (written by Joe Mock)
Inspired by life in BC's Kootney Mountains, Black Dog is performed in the style of a traditional fiddle clog/jig and improvised upon with daring flare that ventures into the modes of raga. Featuring Rick on vocals, with guitar, fiddle, and dulcimer.
8. Lost Soul Man - dirty down dulcimer blues (written by Rick Scott)
The blues as I know 'em, cheaper than therapy with way more groove. Featuring Rick on vocals, with piano, dulcimer, and mandolin.
9. Picking Country a country and eastern instrumental (written by Joe Mock)
An up-tempo tribute to the vocabulary of country guitar playing that climbs through five themes and four modulations. Featuring electric guitar accompanied by dulcimer and mandolin.
10. Little Bit A Good (written by Rick Scott)
This song with a Cajun feel was inspired by my baby daughter's first steps. Somehow almost three decades later, it's still important. Featuring Rick on vocals, with piano, dulcimer, and mandolin.
11. One of the Few Times an R&B ballad (written by Joe Mock)
A love story summarized by the occassional and continuing performance of a band. Featuring Joe on vocals, with guitar, dulcimer and mandolin.
12. War Is Over Overture - a concerto for hog fiddle (written by Rick Scott)
A simple wish with a simple relevance in these complex and disturbing times. Featuring Rick on limited vocals, with fiddle, dulcimer, and guitar.
13. Oohlahey (written by Rick Scott)
Why just sit and watch... why not sing along? I wrote this song before Joe moved to France and now his singing the French line makes this song from my kids album The Electric Snowshoe all grown up and authentique! Featuring Rick on vocals, with dulcimer, guitar, and mandolin.
