Debut album from singer/songwriter/pianist Pete Muller - described as Harry Chapin meets Bruce Hornsby or Billy Joel.
Bio / Background
"When I hear Peter play the piano, it becomes a celebration, not just an experience. The music invites every part of me to sing; to dance; to become totally entwined with the sounds he produces. What a treat!"
Jody Gill
co-Director, Main Stage Coffee House
Interpreter at Clearwater, Falcon Ridge and Winterhawk festivals
Pete Muller writes and performs songs with an ear to rhythm and improvisation. Whether it's a large audience, or a small group, Muller's music connects with the listener. "Music is best when it's shared. There's something about getting up in front of an appreciative audience that sharpens and focuses you."
Muller's imagination is always enriched by travel. A five-pound keyboard has joined him on hiking and kayaking trips to the Himalayas, Ecuador, and New Zealand, as well as river trips to Arizona, Montana and Idaho.
↓ more ↓These places, as well as Muller's diverse background and experiences living and working in California and New York, lend resonance and originality to his songs.
"Improvisation is a very important part of my music," he explains. "I never play a song the same way twice." Informal and unexpected, Muller moves seamlessly from his improvisational roots and large repertoire of cover tunes, to his debut CD release of original material, "Just One Lifetime." The CD features Ben Hoyumpa on drums, Catherine Popper on bass, and Lisa Batten on backing vocals.
As you'd expect, Muller's musical influences are diverse. Think Harry Chapin meets Bruce Hornsby with a dash of Billy Joel, and you'll start to get the idea He's also been inspired by Van Morrison, Cat Stevens, Shawn Colvin, and Richard Shindell, as well as jazz pianists Keith Jarrett and McCoy Tyner.
After living in Berkeley, California for seven years, Muller now divides his time between New York City and Westport, Connecticut. Muller has played at venues in NYC including Makor, Triad Lounge and The Cutting Room, in Connecticut at the Acoustic Café and numerous coffee houses, as well as gigs in Salt Lake City, Utah, and Hawaii. For the past two years, Muller has also been hosting a weekly gathering at his NYC apartment where songwriters come and share new material in a workshop format.
If you like the music, drop him a line and let him know. He'd love to hear from you.
