Bio / Background
Real music and real songwriting!, February 4, 2003
Reviewer: Ron Hatcher from Indianapolis, IN USA
I've had this CD for a couple months now, and have listened to almost nothing else since. It grabs you with the first listening, but grabs you more every time you que it up. The melodies, the picking, the lyrics -- it's all here. Not country, not blues, not rock, not folk, but at the same time all the above. More than that, though, it's intelligent and infintely listenable. Worth every penny and then some. Guy Clark, John Prine, Delbert and Tompall, move over.
"This guy is the REAL thing, a legend, and he is REAL good, too...You can look him up in Folk Hound." OlfolkieJim@aol.com
"Originally released in 2000, this little gem of an album became something of a cult item, and ultimately hard to come by. This re-release on Kinky Friedman's Kinkajou label...should solve that problem..."

What some other artists have said about Panama Red and HomeGrown:
"Priceless..." Marshall Chapman
"Soulful..." David Olney
"Raw..." Kinky Friedman
"Uncompromising..." Keith Glass
"Panama Red's unique, tasty guitar stylings and raw soulful vocal performance make
this easily one of the most listenable CD's of the year. 'HomeGrown' is from the
heart, transcending black and white, blues, country and rock'n'roll. From "Jelly' to
'RocknRoll Across the USA', it contains simple wisdom and natural beauty. Less is
definitely more in this case. There are no Nashville producers or Hollywood
arrangers to take what is great and make it good. [This] is Panama Red at his
considerable best. "

Do all Texas Jewboys end up back in the Kinky Friedman fold? Don't know the answer but singer/songwriter/guitarist Panama gains some kind words from the mystery writer on here, and for once they speak the sincere truth.
This is the kind of album they don't make any more - a bloke and ten of his songs naked (metaphorically speaking) in front of a microphone - imagine that!
Brave man.
And Red (nee Danny Finley) is a soulful singer, the same way that applies to someone such as Donnie Fritts or Billy Swan - lived-in maybe the more accurate term.
He sure nuff knows how to write a song, as is well and truly demonstrated by the midway point of track 2 Heaven On Earth which hits a groove and stays there.
His earthy guitar playing is another plus And he swoops down on that bluesy thang in Poor Boy like a solo John Fogerty.
It's raw, uncompromising and most of all honest.
