The acoustic / electric violin of Omar Lopez bridges the gap between jazz, rock, contemporary classical, world beat, and ambient electronica and dance music.
Bio / Background
Omar Lopez, more widely recognized as "the guy with the red violin", is a true entertainer. Raised in Austin, Texas, the classically-trained violinist culls his style from jazz, rock, pop, R&B, and even Latin and Middle Eastern musical influences. Voted one of the Best String Musicians in the Austin Chronicle Music Poll for 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, and 2007, he has also been ranked as one of MySpace's Top Ten Classical Artists in Texas and holds his audiences' attention with his signature brand of instrumental fusion rock, emotionally-charged lyric-driven ballads, and his charismatic, commanding, and at times explosive stage presence.
↓ more ↓After graduating from the Fine Arts Academy at McCallum High School and majoring in Music Performance at Texas State University, Omar was granted the opportunity to be the featured solo violinist with the internationally-renowned Dreamsound Orchestra, Latin-jazz and salsa sensation The Brew, and Austin Music Award winners such as world-fusion band Pieces of East and electronic-pop band Matson Belle. Over the course of several years, his performances and recordings with these and other groups earned his deserved reputation as "Austin's violin sensation".
The February 2005 release of his debut solo album, "FOREVER RED", set Omar onto a new path as a solo artist as he assembled his own live band of musicians hailing from progressive rock, classical, jazz, Latin, pop, gospel, electronic, and experimental music backgrounds. During the year following the release, he was granted the honor of opening for famed singer-songwriter and classical guitarist Jose Feliciano and was also selected to be interviewed as the musical artist for the Austin episode of "Round Trip Ticket", an international travel series which airs on the LOGO network. Omar was also featured in Houston's premier Spanish-language entertainment, art, and fashion magazine NUESTRO MUNDO as the September 2006 cover story, a place held the previous month by Shakira.
With so many achievements behind him and so many blessings for which to be thankful, Omar Lopez is proud and excited to announce the June 2007 release of "EXPERIENCE", his sophomore album of energy-filled and awe-inspiring music recorded with his full band during his 2006 concert series and in the recording studio during the early part of 2007. As he continues to compose music for his third, as-yet-untitled of all-new material, Omar plans to perform in venues across the globe, ranging from concert halls to arenas and church auditoriums to jazz festival stages, and looks forward to what the future will bring.

Amazing stuff...ctobola wrote on February 11, 2008
Lopez's ethereal, soaring violin is remarkable. I'd highly recommend this CD. The addition of vocal tracks to the CD seems to break the flow -- especially for those of us who enjoy our inspiration without words.
