Tom Waits on Speed, and Pearl Jam, or the Replacements. Keeping the torch burning in the tradition of good rock songs.
Editorial review
The brainchild of Howie Statland, this group has created a cult following in their hometown with a blistering blend of hard, primal rock riffs while addressing some wider issues in the process. "The Fallout" fuses all that is good about the Strokes but has the frontman doing a well-versed Bruce Springsteen delivery in front of a cute alternative rock bassline. "Harbor" has a short amount of singalong material within it, but seems to tackle the record industry and its vices surrounding it elegantly in a pop/rock framework. Drawing mostly on his hometown of New York City, Statland's group moves into an urban roots rock model on "Lies." While some of the songs hit the right notes musically, lyrically they're slightly weaker. Thankfully, on "Empire of Doubt," the group fuses both areas to perfection in a tight pop/rock jangle. "Halo Man" picks up on the same vibe, but some numbers miss the mark occasionally, such as "Bigger." Closing with the epic in "Pick & Choose," the album ends on a nice high note, but most of the album hovers above a comfortable middle ground for a good effort which could have been great. ~ Jason MacNeil, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
Musician/songwriter Howie Statland lives in New York City and has just completed his latest project, a selection of eleven songs he recorded with his new band, NYCSMOKE.
Throughout the 90's Howie wrote, recorded and toured with his band; RCA recording artists THIN LIZARD DAWN. He subsequently formed his current sound and new band, NYCSMOKE.
NYCSMOKE is Howie Statland on guitar and vocals, Jon Weber (Hedwig and the Angry Inch) on drums, Martin Ewens (Big Mouth) on bass, and Rob Perez (Anxiety) on guitar.
NYCSMOKE's material depicts the experiences of a New York street soul survivor whose only salvation is through song. The music has been referred to sounding like Tom Waits, Pearl Jam, and The Velvet Underground, but it is really a sound all it's own.
Leaning towards an "urban garage" sound, Statland wrote, directed, and scored a film entitled "LOW FLAME" in 1998. Howie recorded two lo-fi albums under that name. He screened and performed the soundtrack live to the film at the P.S.

Howie also directed and wrote the music for the film "NEW YORK CITY ARIA". In May 2000, the film had its premiere at The Anthology Film Archives which included the works of Jonas Mekas and Ralph Steiner. Howie, Philip Glass and Jon Gibson performed live music to these silent films.
In November 2000, Howie performed a solo repertoire in Paris. He later joined Philip Glass in Luxembourg for a repeat performance of the program by Jonas Mekas.
