Editorial review
Canadian quartet The Novaks certainly aren't the first band to take inspiration from the Rolling Stones, but few have captured the group's ramshackle approach to R&B with such insouciance. The blistering "It's a Shame", for example, is a heady reminder of where The Stones started out, ripping up hot, sweaty clubs with short, assaultive numbers indebted to Chuck Berry. The country tinged "Ann" nods to the Brits' brief flirtation with the genre in the early '70s, but The Novaks give it a Tom Petty twist. "Dullsville" perfectly splits the difference, Petty backed by a steel guitar playing Keith Richards. The impetuous "I'll Give You a Ring", meanwhile, hints at "Start It Up" era Stones. Yet for all their cocky takes on Mick & Keef's sound, The Novaks have their own ideas as well, like adding psychedelic Hammond organ and a rousing sax solo to the bluesy "If You Can Do It", or wickedly tipping a hat to New Order with "Man by the Door"'s guitar riff. The fabulous "Don't Worry Baby" is even cleverer, beautifully blending purer R&B verses with a 60s flavored, harmony drenched chorus, while the punk edged "Doesn't Anybody Hear It" boasts an even more rousing chorus. The riffs may strut, but it's the melodies that rule this roost. From hard rockers like the driving opener "No One Quite Like You" to the bluesy ballad "You Don't Have to Hang Around", which closes this superb set with a crashing finale, The Novaks rock it old school. But then this is an old set, originally released in Canada 2005, but now finally picked up for a wider audience, and enhanced by the inclusion of a pair of music videos. Now if only the Stones were as fired up by their music as The Novaks. ~ Jo-Ann Greene, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
“Viva La Novaks One of the best records of the year”
Stevie Van Zant of Little Steven’s Underground Garage
“Passionate enough to incite a bar brawl, yet endearing
enough to clean up the mess afterwards” Exclaim!
“They compress steady grooves, chunky guitar riffs, tasty lead licks and sweet harmonies to a diamond shine.”
Eye Weekly, Toronto
Made up of Mick Davis (vocals, guitar), Chuck Tucker (vocals, guitar), Mark Neary (vocals, bass) and Elliot Dicks (drums), The Novaks have spent the last three years converting the masses one bar room at a time. Alternating between powerful, unapologetic hooks and darker moments of soulful authenticity, they weave honored rock n’ roll traditions together with modern stylings to create a truly timeless sound. It’s electric, raw, and magnetic. It’s The Novaks.
The roots of the band spawn from the childhood friendship of Mick and Chuck.
↓ more ↓Though the two grew up across the street from each other in Wesleyville, NFLD, it wasn’t until they both moved to St. John’s that things began to take shape. After playing individually with a variety of different acts, they began to work together to form a band in the summer of 2002. Mark and Elliott were enlisted in the following months and the quartet’s unique chemistry was complete.
Things quickly took shape for the group as they signed a management and production deal with Inside Music, began recording demos, and set out on a UK tour. On the tour the band performed at some of the top clubs in London, including the Borderline and also as a part of Sony UK’s "Blame Canada" showcase.
Following their UK dates, The Novaks set up a recording studio in an old community hall (Atlantic Hall) and an empty tennis club (Riverdale Tennis Club) in St. John’s for three weeks in November, 2004. In these familiar surroundings, they crafted a debut album which, as Mick puts it “musically defines everything the band is about.”
From the opening salvo of "No One Quite Like You" to the closing crashes of “You Don’t Have To Hang Around”, The Novaks offer twelve original songs that highlight the depth of their songwriting and the intensity of their performances. This sound is exemplified singles “Goodbye Rock and Roll Band” and “Doesn’t Anybody Hear It”. Showing the band’s ability to instantly grab the listener, the songs carry memorable melodies atop energetic riffs and driving rhythms.
Over the past year, The Novaks have showcased at Canada Music Week, NXNE, and soon as a part of CMJ’s Music Marathon in New York. They have performed with national groups like Matt Mays & El Torpedo and Sam Roberts along with international acts such as the Psychedelic Furs and Hugh Cornwell of the Stranglers. The band’s song, "No One Quite Like You", was also recently featured as "The Coolest Song in The World" on Little Steven's Underground Garage (one of the most listened to syndicated radio shows in North America)and has been played ever since. See them as well in march of 2006 at the SXSW fest. in Austin, Texas!!
