This is a lyrical folk album with a goal of music that can be played in the woods without clashing with the sounds of nature. Some songs are sad, some are funny. All the songs have the flavor of the North woods of Minnesota.
Bio / Background
This is the fourth album by singer/songwriter Bob Nordquist, but the first to be recorded completely solo. It was recorded live and outside in the woods of Northern Minnesota on a cold, rainy, windy weekend in early May, 2007. The songs were written with the goal of a collection of songs that could be played in the woods without clashing with the music of the wind in the trees, the singing rivers and the birds. To accomplish this it was recorded outside and live – no overdubs, no compression.
The last CD by Bob Nordquist was recorded as the band, The Intangibles. “The Animal Within” was an ambitious and critically acclaimed project bringing together elements of world music, rock, blues, jazz and classical. It was recorded and played live at the CD release party with a full orchestra. “Kettle River” is much simpler and more focused. To stress the stories and lyrics, it was recorded solo with just guitar and vocal.
The stories are about Northern Minnesota.
↓ more ↓Some are historical, such as the 1918 fires, which destroyed Cloquet, Moose Lake, Kettle River and several other towns and the incredible storm of July 4th, 1999, which blew down 25 million trees in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness on the busiest camping weekend of the year. Other songs are love stories, a tribute to Bob’s dad and a story about a very bad dog.
