An eclectic collection of finger picking and flat picking styles blended together on acoustic guitars with harmonica and acoustic lap slide.
Bio / Background
No effect was formed when Carl Accordino and Dean Bell first joined musical forces to combine their writing styles.
Separately they had been performing in various groups, duos and solos for 20+ years
Carl's guitar playing consists of multiple tunings an intricate finger pickings while Dean's was more aggressive and rhythm driven. But the two styles together was the mix they had both been looking for the perfect blend of nuance and emotion, of melody and rhythms.
With lots of stories waiting to be told the writing began as a duo and the previous solo writings were embellished with each adding their own interpretations of the other's songs.
From the cd "no effect"...
"RANDOM" (bell)- a Spanish flair with driving rhythms and a sultry lead throughout tells the story of a love that won't let go.
"SINK OR SWIM" (bell)- features Carl on Acoustic Lap Slide and Dean doing a walk down progression on this country blues song about a guy that is plagued by a ruthless woman.
↓ more ↓"PERFECT NIGHT" (accordino)- is a story about a special place in Texas where two guitarists would perform on the lakeshore at night to an unseen audience. Carl's finger picking is paired with Dean on the 12 string acoustic and Harmonica.
"DAYS OF STEEL" (accordino)- uses flat-picking, slide and strong flat top chords to tell the tale of youth coming of age and then reflection in a small town.
"HIDE" (bell)-is bold and straight forward telling it like it is as we all have things in our lives that we "Hide" behind Carl and Dean both let loose in Hide lyrically and through Carl's aggressive guitar leads.
"UGLY AND COLD" (accrodino)- is a true story about an old buddy of Carl's back in Texas that always calls to boast about the perfect weather (and the lack of same in Buffalo) Dean's leads are featured on this track along with Carl's captivating right hand style.
"TAKE ME AWAY" (bell)-is a love story that never really happened as Dean takes you into a dream and a plea for it to stay a little longer. Carl lays down several tracks too in three different styles as Dean carries the melody line.
"MIDNIGHT RIDE" (accordino/bell)-was "no effect's" first collaboration song telling the story of the two guitarists other love, motorcycles. It's more slide guitar and a slow easy flat top taking you down the road on two wheels on a hot summer night
It's not unusual to come and see then live to find as many as 9 acoustic guitars on stage for different tunings and different sounds.
How do you describe "No Effect's" music?
Acoustic Rock? Folk Rock? Blues? A Little Country Blues? Alternative? Power Ballads?
Yes.
Every song is different, different in theme, style and story but still true to the acoustic roots we have always loved
You're going to like it.
Thanks for listening,
Dean ~ Carl
