Bio / Background
When David Newton set out to create his vision of Newton’s Theorem, the details were fuzzy. He knew only one thing. The sound had to be timeless and unable to define. In this day and age, where cookie-cutter bands replace each other as the seasons change, he wanted his sound to be unique. The result?
Lead singer, drummer, stand-up bass player, rhythm guitar, and for the lead…a cello?
Dave met Gary Delin, a classically trained cello player and singer, in the summer of 2001. Dave was frustrated after playing in numerous cover bands and disparately wanted to convert to playing as an original act. Dave and Gary worked together as servers in the restaurant industry and after finding out that Gary had the ability to play the cello and the innate ability to harmonize began to concur.

After an epiphany of musical cohesiveness and a few months of wax on wax off rehearsal so Gary could figure out how to play and sing at the same time, they decided to try out the three songs that they had practiced as a duo at an open mic in Scottsdale, AZ. The response was hugely encouraging and they knew they were on to something. Enter Bart Applewhite on upright bass and Aric Stack on drums and the formula was complete.
The end result produces a floaty, funky, jazzy, progressive, eclectic acoustic, pop rock sound with loads of unique style. It has fun hooks, but it also multi-layered. It’s a juxtaposition of so many different elements that it doesn’t seem like it should work, but it does.
Dave writes incredibly catchy songs with great hooks and unique stories behind them that, once you’re in on them, only make them that much better. Gary provides the cello, but also crystal clear harmonies that blend so smoothly that the two voices can sound like one.
Formula I, Newton’s Theorem’s first effort, is incredibly pleasing to the listener’s ear. The songs flow perfectly together and showcase strong musical abilities by every member. The songs are created with a strong pop sensibility and with enough variety that you can be uniquely entertained throughout the CD.
