New River Line's first release, picked up by Kindred Records. This album has a mix of original Kentucky Bluegrass Music and a few traditional standards. Produced by New River Line and recorded at River Tracks Studios.
Bio / Background
Kentucky-based New River Line is guitarist and lead vocalist Dave Carroll; tenor singer and bass, Dobro and guitar player Jerry Wayne Chaney; banjo player Jamie Sparks; and baritone and lead vocalist, mandolin, bass and guitar player Ronnie King.
The biggest surprise and strength of NRL is that the bulk of its tunes are originals -- and they are good! The disc kicks off with the Danny Barnes/Elmer Burchett-penned Cold Steel Rails, which establishes what you can expect for the next 31 minutes -- smooth, pleasant vocals and harmonies, lots of fine picking with imaginative instrument breaks and well-thought lyrics.
On Old Martin Box Carroll writes, “Faded love the game is over, Misery river don’t step over that old love that used to mean the world to me, A broken heart, a worried mind I’ll move on somewhere down the line with this old Martin box and that girl’s memory.

Another example is the chorus to Rambler’s Way, written by King: “Now I’m gone and I’m on the road again, My feet will never kick the rocks of this old town again, So so long and I’m sorry by the way, For the lovin’ and the leavin’ is just the rambler’s way.”
Besides a few traditional numbers such as the uptempo Honey In The Rock, which features an inventive Dobro break by Chaney, and the easygoing Darcy Farrow, which is accompanied by the sweet fiddle work of guest Albon Lee Clevenger, the remainder of the disc is pure NRL originals -- and there’s some more good ones.
A few of my favorites were two more by Carroll: Thumbin’ Down From Richmond Town, full of blazing banjo and mandolin licks; the banjo and Dobro-driven title track, New River Line; and the fast and furious fiddle-led King/Carroll-penned Blues Runnin’ Over Me Again.
If you like your bluegrass original, uptempo and full of drive, you need to take a ride on the New River Line. - Kevin Kerfoot - BMP
