an avant garde joint of soul/folk/funk/multi-culturally driven lyrics of explosive sociopolitical-spiritual-queer-conscious artistry.
Bio / Background
"One listen through the album and it's obvious that besides a strong desire to inspire social change, Nebulai has an incredible sense of musicality." - -Out In The Mountains
"... it's easy to grasp the left-leaning nature of Nebulai's political agenda... even grittier than most- the instrumentation is what seperates Nebulai from the rest of the angry rocker clan."
-The Valley Advocate
Re-Perkussionz of Sovereign Art(RPSA) presents indie artist, Nebulai. Producing his debut album Odd Man--Out entirely. Nebulai wrote all the songs on the disc and performed them in collaboration with "queer artist/guitarist/singer/songwriter " Antara. Also making a strong appearance throughout the album as percussionist/electric violinist is Derrik Jordan of World Soul Records, along with Cheryl Reid, Toronto's former drummer of the Ember Swift Band, and Dana Shellmire of Deaf Muse Sound, as well as many others.
↓ more ↓This eclectic mix of turntables, acoustic guitar, heavy percussion and powerhouse-soulful vocals translates into a sonic landscape of anything from West African field recordings that offer snip-its of spiritual advice from the motherland; or jammin' out to the tape deck in an old beat up bus somewhere in Africa. All this coupled with funk/folk/rock/multi-cultural licks with a raw sociopolitical message.
Nebulai has gotten the chance to share stages with such artists as Pamela Means, Edie Carrie, Ember Swift, World Beat, Ryan Montbleau, Arjuna Greist, Doria Roberts amongst a host of others. He co-produced several songs off the Grandma's Work CD with his fellow workers-Gooselove and Antara in 2001 off the indie label Folk Poet Records. One of the tracks off the album was chosen for a national compilation of queer artists produced by folk singer Doria Roberts. Available in stores nationwide in November 2002, the double CD includes such artists as Ani Difranco, Melissa Ferrick, Toshi Reagon, Alix Olson, Pamela Means, and Bitch and Animal.
The self produced Odd Man--Out CD is a perfect example of independently derived art, fierce in it's execution, pushing boundaries between the genres of folk/funk/rock/multi-cultural. The fresh recording elements that Nebulai exhibits coupled with speaking to direct issues from corporate impact, celebration/struggle of homosexuality, to spiritual empowerment can't help but leave you with a sense of creative empowerment.
