Mountain Lions International
2006 Tour for the Cure for Diabetes Research
Orfordville, WI Sept 26, 2006—Rick Schneider is pleased to announce Mountain Lions International is dedicating their 2006 fall tour to help find the cure for Type I Juvenile Diabetes. Playing Afre-rok style original reggae music, MLI has 40% of its members with a total 35 years of experience dealing with Type I diabetes. They will attest that more experience does not make living easier. The Mountain Lions will donate 20% of the proceeds from their CD sales Vybrayshuns and Dance with the Lions to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. A container for donations will be in place at each of their performances for people wishing to donate to JDRF.
The Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation was formed in 1970 by parents of Type I children with the purpose of finding a cure for this disease.
↓ more ↓JDRF has contributed over $900 million (including more than $98 million in FY2005) towards finding the cure. JDRF is funding 75% of the research to cure Type I diabetes. Current worldwide research is very encouraging towards realizing JDRF’s goal.
Diabetes affects an estimated 230 million people worldwide and is expected to grow to 350 million people by 2025. In the USA 20.8 million people or about 7% of the population has diabetes. It is the sixth leading cause of deaths and is expanding at an alarming rate. $132 billion is the estimate of direct and indirect yearly costs in the USA.
Type I or Juvenile Diabetes accounts for about 10% of the cases of diabetes. Type I is seen mostly in children and young adults but can occur at any age. Type I individuals are dependent on daily doses of insulin to maintain their blood sugar levels. They will die without it and poor control of these levels will result in serious complications.
