Raw, ragged and brimming with energy, most of these songs are from two days of manic songwriting and recording.
Bio / Background
It turns out the rumors are true.
Since the summer of 2004, there has been lots of talk about SVETLANA--that it was Moes Haven's best work yet, that it took everything we love about the band and packaged it on one spectacular disc.
How could one collection of 14 original songs live up to half a year of rumors and conjecture? Simply by being as great as this disc is.
Yes, SVETLANA will not only live up to your expectations. It will surpass them and easily become your favorite Moes Haven disc.
Well, that's if you get Moes Haven. Surely there will be folks out there who do not recognize the genius. And Moes Haven couldn't care less about them. But to those of you who have heard songs like "And I Think of You," "O Kee Pa (Torture Test)" and "Falsities on Existentialism" and still wanted to hear more, this is your album.
Lots has been made about how SVETLANA is a concept album, or even a rock opera.
↓ more ↓But Farley and Scalzo have been quick to point out that the thin storyline--that of a love triangle between James Boswell, Samuel Johnson and Svetlana--is only there if you search for it. Otherwise, this is just a collection of great songs. Nothing more. Nothing less.
So Moes Haven junkies will certainly examine every line of this complex album and happily discover plenty to get excited about. But the casual listener will also be equally entertained by the sheer high quality of the music and lyrics.
And what are the songs like? Well, there's a little bit of everything here. We've got the laid-back acoustic opener, "Arizona's Flat," (which features the brilliant opening lines, "Arizona's flat / All my friends are dead." There's the bass-fueled, rhythmic juggernaut, "How to Charge Up Your Cell Phone..." which will forever disprove Farley's claim that he has no rhythm. Beyond that, you'll get the glossy production of "Viceroy," the school musical stylings of "Is She Gonna Be Here Tomorrow" and the spaced-out combination of acoustic guitar and synth of "Spaceven." And that's just naming a few.
But I won't get into it. Just listen to the songs. Some are ragged. Some are tight. But they're all good. No, they're all great. If you ever had to describe Moes Haven to someone in less than one hour, you'd simply have to play them this record. If you've never heard of Moes Haven, buy this disc and discover the most inventive band around today. If you're already converted, then here's enough music to keep you happy for months.
