Throughout the month of October, 2006, Moes Haven wrote and recorded songs about horror movies. These are the best tracks from that experiment.
Bio / Background
What inspires a band to write 16 songs about different low-budget horror movies from the 1970s and 1980s? I don't know. But at this point, there's little sense in trying to understand any decision made by this notorious songwriting duo from New England. All we need to know is that they keep writing great songs.
This month, the boys focused their songwriting abilities on such little-known movies as "The Jar," "Curse of the Screaming Dead" and "Christmas Evil." It's insane! It's absolutely insane! What's most insane about this project is that each song is so well crafted. It's one thing to write songs about horror movies. It's another thing entirely to write GOOD songs about horror movies.
In fact, there are songs here that many listeners could enjoy without ever knowing what inspired them. Just listen to "Final Exam." It's a whistful tale of unrequited love that just happens to be from the point of view of a character in a horror movie.

Other tracks delve deeper into the mayhem and violence of these films. But somehow it seems right. Songs about psychotic killers shouldn't be this hummable. But these ones are. And that's because Farley and Scalzo aren't the kind of horror movie fans who revel in the blood and gore. On the contrary, they love these movies for the small moments, filled with poor acting, poor dialogue and poor directing. In that combination of failures, the members of Moes Haven see something worth celebrating.
Perhaps the members of Moes Haven see kindred spirits in the makers of these films. Sure, many of these filmmakers lacked talent, experience and money. But that didn't stop them. Likewise, the members of Moes Haven have often claimed that their mastery of the guitar and piano is rather limited. Also, the members of Moes Haven have had to pay for all their equipment and release their albums independently. But that hasn't stopped them from becoming the most prolific band of 2006!
Let's hear it for hard working artists who struggle in obscurity! Let's hear it for homegrown projects made on low budgets! Let's hear it for (SH)OC(K)TOBER!
