Psychedelic folk pop with classic boy/girl vocals and Spector-esque orchestration.
Bio / Background
Sean Curley started the Midget in 2001 after moving to Seattle from his native Syracuse, New York. The demise of his former band, Wallmen (Bar/None), led Sean to develop his home studio, and with much encouragement from friend and former Wallmen producer Dave Fridmann (Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev), the Midget changed from home recording experiment into full time project.
Building on decades of home recording experience, and on production techniques learned while working with Fridmann, Sean focused his efforts on writing songs with former bandmate Amber Rossino (Druggies), and long time Portland, OR resident John McDonald (One Death Two, Clayfoot). The trio recorded basic tracks over a series of long weekends, with Sean and Amber adding vocals and instrumentation later on.
↓ more ↓In an effort to avoid the clinical use of sequencing and samples, a wide variety of instruments were played in real time, and manipulated later on using assorted guitar pedals, analog synthesizers and sound processors. Banjo, glockenspiel, flute, and lap steel, mix with guitars and bass to create a unique style of psychedelic folk rock. The ten resulting tracks are awash in bizarre sounds and hooky melody. Lyrics draw heavily from literature, personal experience, and pop culture, making the content humorous enough to diffuse heady influences.
Released independently on the band's own Impko Records, the Midget will appeal to those looking for solid songwriting, classic pop melodies, and ear catching production. Unique enough to draw fans of indie and folk pop, the Midget plays in support of their self-titled debut with a dynamic stage show combining live guitars and classic boy/girl vocals over programmed drum beats.
