Progressive, leftfield and thinking-forward hip-hop brought to you by Los Angeles producer M.Fusion, heavyweight MC's Radioinactive & Die Young (from The Shape Shifters crew) and French glitch-hop superstar Debmaster .
Bio / Background
Eagerly awaiting the collapse of civilization, M.Fusion creates music to pass the time. From the day he was brought home from the hospital in Queens, NY, M.Fusion was exposed to an almost infinite array of music genres, played very loudly, by his parents. This continued throughout his childhood as his family migrated to Los Angeles, CA
"I had to take two busses to get to the high school, and it took about an hour each way. My favorite thing to do was sit in the very last row, look out the window, and think about music. Sometimes I'd mix songs together in my head...taking the beat from one and the melody from another...In 1989 I decided it was time to do what I could to get my own set up of two turntables and a mixer."
A bicoastal upbringing combined with a strong appreciation of music and cultures of any kinds is manifested in the music that M.Fusion makes. He makes the kind of music that he himself would like to hear, but also has a desire to share it with others. M.
↓ more ↓Fusion's small indie label Nice Records, was created as a vehicle for his music as well as the music of his friends. Releasing records since 1996 through his own imprint, Fusion has gradually developped his own sound, mixing his multiple influences to create a very unique approach.
It's noisy, it's melodic...it's strange, it's corny...it's many things.
It's the music of M.Fusion.
Early influences include Devo, James Brown, Roxy Music, The Last Poets and Brian Eno. Later influences include Depeche Mode, Big Audio Dynamite, Thomas Dolby, Meat Beat Manifesto, Public Enemy, Front 242, Boogie Down Productions, The Beastie Boys, Ice T and Skinny Puppy. Recent influences include Radiohead, 90's Jungle/Drum and Bass, Underground Hip Hop, Fela Kuti, and of course Devo.
Movies also play a big part in the music of M.Fusion, especially the work of David Lynch. Other directors include Jim Jarmusch, George A Romero, John Carpenter, Michael Moore, John Kricfalusi, the Brothers Quay and Mike Judge.
Involved in the so-called West Coast Underground hip-hop scene since a couple of years, M.Fusion has collaborated with numerous gifted MC's and beatmakers (AWOL One, Subtitle, Existereo, Fat Hed, Akuma, Avatar, Deeskee, Presto, Nocturnal Ron to name a few). Besides his solo works (a 12inch, two EP's and two LPs), he sometimes teams up with Shape Shifters' MC Die Young. Under the moniker Dead Air, Fusion & Die released two full-length albums ("The Dead Air Project" and "Possession") in which they created a "dark, experimental and brooding" new sound...
