Anthemic, melodic rock with a touch of britpop, alt-country and indie fuzz.
Bio / Background
Mean Ether is making strides in the music world the old-fashioned way - with great songs. In an era full of empty hipster trends, this Philadelphia-based trio's melodic sound hearkens back to a time when college radio truly represented an "alternative." Artists like Bob Mould, The Pixies, R.E.M., Juliana Hatfield and Radiohead immediately spring to mind while listening to Mean Ether's latest, Silvertongue, which the band wrote, produced and recorded independently in its rehearsal space.
The resulting disc is a memorable, refreshing dose of tunefulness that knowingly recalls the rock of a not so distant past - sincere music without complications or pretensions. Led by guitarist/singer Jason Straub, the independent and focused energy fueling the songs also permeates Mean Ether's live performances.
↓ more ↓The rock-solid backbone of Drew Erickson's drumming and Erik Caplan's bass help give the band an impressively large sound for a three-piece group, and the trio has performed countless shows for audiences all along the East Coast since the band's founding in 1998. As time passes and gimmicky acts fall by the wayside, Mean Ether and its music will stand as a vital example of what really matters in popular music - great songs played with honesty and emotion.
"Four Stars" -- Origivation Magazine
"The songs... feature plenty of distorted guitar riffs and clear, resonant, yet equally aggressive, vocal melodies... a worthwhile listen." -- Rockpile Magazine
"The Dave Grohl-ian choruses these boys produce are their best moments..." -- Philadelphia Weekly
Mp3.com reviews of "Chaos Girl":
"Cool driving drums... nice harmonies [with] great vocal delivery [and] lots of good images... overall: cool song."
"Alt/Rock footstomper with a hard-edged sound. The lyrics really pull you into the song and the strong vocal performance keeps you there!>>>A+"
