Bio / Background
ECOLOGOS—a solo album of original songs , chants, and performance poems—derives from a larger collection of work titled The Goddess Project; inspired in part by the artist's doctoral work in ecological philosophy. Written, performed, and recorded by Elizabeth Meacham, ECOLOGOS’ earth-centered music carries the listener into a hauntingly primal experience.
Breaking away from her earlier recordings in style and content, ECOLOGOS features diverse instrumentation, including guitar, thumb piano, alto recorder, flute, and djembe. Concerning the eco-spiritual lyrics: “I didn’t set out to write goddess music or pagan music,” says Elizabeth, "I didn’t set out to write spiritual music. It just happened. As I spent more and more time connecting and creating in the woods an experience began to open up for me that required expression. That resulted in music, poetry, art (seen on the cover).

The wide array of musical styles derive from a similar inspiration: a longing for and discovery of a connection with aspects of the divine feminine, represented in various ways in all of the songs. “Early on in the process, work began emerging that had decidedly eco-spiritual themes, some very subtle, some more overt. In songs that were written earlier, such as Be Still, and Where Have all the Stories Gone? I was seeking. In later songs, you can hear that I’m finding. I tried to arrange the album that way, to show the progression of my own experience.”
This eclectic collection of arrangements blends previously disparate aspects of Elizabeth’s creative identity, merging the singer/songwriter with the performance artist, while spicing it all with the influence of the little girl that grew up on big harmony church music. “I like to think of it as Joni Mitchell meets Laurie Anderson meets Sweet Honey in the Rock, all singing about the Spirit of the Earth.”
