Bio / Background
From the author: “This is actually my first solo release. I’ve been working with many bands and supporting other artists since I was 15. It’s funny that my first solo album would be a collection of ‘greatest hits’ over the last 21 years. But, for what it's worth, they are the 10 best songs I feel I’ve written so far.
Most of my production comes straight out of my home studio in McKinney, TX. But, these songs were written at critical times in my life, as a sort of therapy, I guess.
There is some dark stuff on this album, but the record has its optimistic moments. For Better or Worse.
The lyrics for ‘Love Will Sustain’ were written by my wife, Donell. She doesn’t write music or lyrics, but one day she just got a whim and started writing about how lucky she was to have me as her 'man.' Who knew? For her birthday in 2005, I secretly wrote music for those lyrics and recorded the song.
↓ more ↓She found the song on her brand new iPod that morning, right after ‘Birthday’ by the Beatles.
‘Legacy’ was co-written with my friend and guitarist, John Walker. He had this killer riff that I ‘just had to write some lyrics to’. It’s about my boys, obviously. When I was done, John found a way to relate to the song and that's how it was born. I feel it’s one of the best rock songs on the album.
‘Love Comes Down’, ‘Back Home’, and ‘Mother Sweet Mother’ are all songs I wrote a while back and recorded with Spirit Jewel and Life of Riley. John was also involved in the Life of Riley project. In fact, he plays guitar on tracks 2, 3, 4, & 5.
'Back Home' is a true story about a girl I knew in southern Mississipi, across the lake from New Orleans up Highway 11. It was a bad scene, and it needed a song. The same applies to 'Donna', but I can't bring myself to tell you about that one.
‘War Dog, Peace Child’ is about my bout (or war) with alcoholism (or mad dog 20/20), and how it played out with my mother. It’s one of the darkest songs on the album, but it has a happy ending, sort of.
The absolute darkest song on the album is the story of ‘Man of God’. No, it’s got nothing to do with religion, nor does it have an agenda. It’s a story of human compassion, a sad story about an ex-evangelist winding up on the streets, abandoned by his followers. It’s loaded with acoustic guitar riffs and big harmonies at the end. It’s what I call a ‘vodka drinking, wrist-slitting, barrel-swallowing, fully-dressed-in-the-bathtub sing-along song’.
You can enjoy these songs and others by buying this album. The money goes directly to ME, and not to anyone who doesn’t deserve it.
One last thing, all lyrics for this album are printed on the CD fold inside. Thank you for taking time to read my rambling, stream-of-conscious writing.”
