Editorial review
Since "The Sun Won't Shine On Virginia," the leadoff track on country guitarist Tim May's debut solo album, features his former bandmates from Crucial Smith -- Kyle Wood, Chris Joslin, Dave Holladay, and May's wife, Gretchen Priest-May -- and they are also featured prominently on other tracks, it's easy to feel that Find My Way Back isn't far from being another Crucial Smith album. But May is in charge here, singing on a number of tracks, some of which he wrote, and mixing in other musicians as he ranges from country to bluegrass to Celtic styles. He has a pleasant tenor voice with a Southern accent, but of course it's his flatpicking that repays the cost of admission, as he showcases a distinctive style on such tunes as the original instrumental "Miss Nari." Find My Way Back is probably more of a busman's holiday than the beginning of an important solo career, but it demonstrates that May is a talented picker who can also write and sing good tunes on occasion. ~ William Ruhlmann, All Music Guide
Bio / Background
If you were not fortunate enough to have caught a show by the Nashville-based group Crucial Smith during its fifteen-year run, flatpicking guitarist Tim May has probably managed to fly under your radar. If that is the case, then get ready for him to pop up on your screen and be added to your list of favorite guitar players, songwriters, and singers because he is starting to fly high. While Crucial Smith was active Tim turned down a number of high profile touring and recording opportunities because he wanted to focus on the band. When word got out in Nashville that the band had dissolved, the offers came pouring in and Tim has become very busy. In the past couple of years he has toured with Patty Loveless, played on an all-star-cast Rounder project called Moody Bluegrass: A Nashville Tribute to the Moody Blues, and recorded a bluegrass gospel project with Charlie Daniels.
↓ more ↓Additionally, FGM Records has released Tim's solo CD Find My Way Back, and Tim is featured in a new FGM Records concert DVD with Brad Davis and Cody Kilby. If you own the Flatpicking Favorites: Hot and Spicy CD and have listened to Cody Kilby and Tim May tear up "Lonesome Fiddle Blues," you'll know why Tim is now getting called to play so many prominent gigs in Nashville. As they say here in southwest Virginia, "The boy can pick!"
While there are plenty of great guitar pickers in Nashville, Tim May adds great songwriting and singing to his list of many talents (which include being equally adept at resonator guitar, banjo, bass, and mandolin). On his solo CD, Find My Way Back, all of Tim's various talents are featured. One only needs to listen to the first cut, "The Sun Won't Shine on Virginia" to know that Tim has the ability to write a bluegrass "hit" and the voice to carry it up the charts.
Find My Way Back provides a perfect blend of original songs and traditional tunes. Tim's new songs include "The Sun Won't Shine on Virginia," "Worries and Troubles are Mine," "I've Got A Feeling," "Find My Way Back." He also includes an original instrumental guitar solo piece called "Miss Nari." The traditional tunes include favorite bluegrass barnburners "Bill Cheatham," (where Tim really shows us his instrumental prowess by playing guitar, banjo, Dobro, mandolin, and bass!) and "Paddy on the Turnpike," (a duet with Tim on guitar and his wife Gretchen Priest-May on fiddle). Other instrumentals include a swinging version of "Limehouse Blues" and haunting arrangements of "The Streets of Laredo" and "Down By the Sally Garden." Rounding out the field is a vocal standard "Sitting On Top of the World."
Joining Tim on this project are a stellar line up of singers and instrumentalists. His old Crucial Smith bandmates, Kyle Wood (mandolin), Chris Joslin (Dobro, banjo), Gretchen Priest-May (fiddle), and Dave Holliday (bass) are on board to provide their instrumental talents and vocal harmonies. Additionally, other of Tim's Nashville picking buddies led a hand on a song or two. These include Brian Christianson (fiddle), Stephen Mougin (mandolin), Mark Holliday (tenor vocal), All Groll (Dobro), Fred Carpenter (fiddle), Tony Wray (banjo), David Harvey (mandolin), and Todd Cook (bass).
Pick up Find My Way Back and you'll know why folks like Charlie Daniels and Patty Loveless are calling Tim May when they need someone to pick and sing bluegrass music with them on their recordings and in their band.
