avant roots folk pop
Bio / Background
"One of the region's most eclectic and diverse new acts" (Lowell Sun), Maybe Baby is touring New England celebrating the independent release of their critically-acclaimed first cd, What Matters. This collaboration of Boston luminaries Jennifer Kimball - whose work in the folk-pop band The Story (her duo with Jonatha Brooke) is now legendary - and Ry Cavanaugh, who anchored the rootsy-folk outfit Vinal Avenue String Band (with Kris Delmhorst and Sean Staples) - has brought forth a slew of praise from local press as the band continues to push the boundaries of acoustic-roots-urban-folk-moody-country-pop music.
The Performing Songwriter calls What Matters, produced by Billy Conway (Morphine, Twinemen) a "stellar, murky, hyper-intelligent collection of songs, [which] is certainly one of the standout releases of the year.
↓ more ↓The songwriting and singing team of Kimball and Cavanaugh incant a thoroughly visceral, thoroughly alive musical spell that is matched only by the boozy, sexy music backing them." Moving effortlessly between duo gigs and band gigs, Kimball and Cavanaugh are equally adept at crooning straight-ahead folk ballads, delivering more mysterious mid-tempo songscapes, and hurling their beautifully-matched voices into more up-tempo songs. Expect to hear lush harmonies, great songwriting, and innovative instrumentation: Kimball plays acoustic guitar and baritone uke, Cavanaugh plays baritone electric guitar.
