Editorial review
If the average new age fan were to encounter the debut album by Maya & Sage in a record store, the cover, Barry Stevens' painting, "Mandala 'Radiance'," which shows a man and a woman in traditional Indian style, likely would suggest to that potential buyer that the album Spirit of Love, subtitled Devotional Chanting & Spiritual Love Songs, was an album of contemplative music with a becalmed, ethereal tone. It is not. While Maya Knowles and her harmonizing husband Sage Knowles do sing repetitive phrases in Sanskrit at several points on the disc, notably the tracks "Jai Sita Ram" and "Lakshmi Ma," Spirit of Love is not really an album to meditate to. It's more an album to dance to, especially for fans of late-'60s pop music. With Maya's reedy voice and catchy tunes matched to Sage's folk-rock arrangements, the songs and performances recall several one-hit-wonder duos of the 1968-1969 period, Friend & Lover ("Reach Out of the Darkness"), Esther & Abi Ofarim ("Cinderella Rockefella"), and even Zager & Evans ("In the Year 2525"), who were both men. If these references are a little too obscure, imagine the Mamas & the Papas or Spanky & Our Gang singing in Sanskrit; there's some of that sunshine pop flavor here. Spirit of Love is likely to get its spiritual fans bopping around the ashram instead of sitting in the lotus position with their eyes closed; just don't buy it if you're looking to go into a trance that doesn't involve dancing. ~ William Rulhmann, All Music Guide

"After a very relaxing introductory invocation, a dance party broke out . . . and I couldn't have been more pleased! Quickly, Maya and Sage break free of traditional boundaries... Pleasantly surprised overall, especially at the diversity. Caught my attention a few times, something I wasn't expecting at all." Steve Allat, The Muse's Muse
"... world dance beats, Sanskrit chants, songs and funky grooves all come together and make something more muscular than the usual twee New Age blandness that fills the racks...a lot of work and soul has gone into the production of what is Maya and Sage's debut album, and it is an album that will win you over." MusicWatch, www.the-borderland.co.uk
"Like the two majestic ancient figures, Radha and Krishna that grace the resplendent cover art, the married duo of Maya & Sage is complimentary in all things music. They call themselves "Spirit Singers" and rightly so. Let your spirit be affected by their positive music and their positive attitude." R J Lannan, New Age Reporter.com
MORE ABOUT "SPIRIT OF LOVE"
Maya's soul awakening mantras and lyrics, clear prophetic vocals, groove guitar and piano are embellished with Sage's unique harmonies and multi-talents on percussion, didgeridoo, Celtic harp, Native American flute, electric guitar, harmonica, and keyboards. Special guest musicians, Silvia Nakkach, Geoffrey Gordon, Craig Owens, and Gary Regina add their inspiring talents to the mixes. These divine chants and songs of love are sometimes soft and tender, sometimes passionately rhythmic, always sprinkled with exotic sounds, and magically moved by world percussion.
Each song carries a message of Love, inviting you to ecstatically merge with the sacred web of universal Love. The songs flow from soft and deeply connecting, like the title song "Spirit of Love" in English and Sanskrit, to dancing rhythms layered with melodic and exotic sounds in the frolicking party song, "Celebration."
Maya and Sage's "feel good" music is pure sonic gold, sacred fun to light your path!
"Maya has a beautiful voice and the music she and Sage create comes from a place of fine intention."
Deva Premal & Miten
"I love Maya's voice. The spirit and energy coming out of her voice is profound and felt eternal."
Raphael "Music to Disappear In"
