15-YR OLD AWARD WINNING SINGER-SONGWRITER -- with a stunning 3-octave range and multi-instrumental skills, Margot MacDonald delivers original alternative rock tunes and powerful ballads with a remarkable depth of emotion and conscience.
Bio / Background
Margot wrote her first song at the age of 7 when she started taking piano lessons. She was hooked. However singing was her true passion. In 4th grade she started performing with the World Children’s Choir. By the time she was 10 she was singing professionally with the Washington National Opera, the Wolf Trap Opera Company, and other musical theatre productions.
However it was the events of 9/11 that prompted Margot’s recording career. The tragedy led her to write the song Imagine There’s a World. When the president invited students to find ways to donate to America’s Fund for Afghan Children, Margot recorded her song. She found herself on the world stage and learned the power and beauty of music.
Margot's songs landed in the lap of John Jennings, the producer-guitarist best known for his Grammy Award winning work with Mary Chapin Carpenter. At the age of 12 she released her debut album, Rising.
↓ more ↓She dedicated it to a school friend battling cancer and donated a portion of the proceeds to the Childhood Leukemia Foundation. Songs from Rising went on to garner honors from the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest as well as two Wammie (Washington Area Music Association) nominations for Best Vocalist and Song of the Year.
Entering high school Margot was accepted as a music major into the prestigious Duke Ellington School of the Arts in Washington DC. Although the repertoire there is classical, Margot’s interests turned to rock music. She started playing guitar and brought her new songs to multi-Wammie Award winning producer Marco Delmar. Margot’s first song with Marco, Serendipity, earned her the first Young Artist Award of the Mid-Atlantic Song Contest. Another song, Quiet Hero, garnered her first award in the rock genre. Both tunes are on Margot's newly released sophomore album, TORN.
Margot's career thus far has put her on stage with notable artisits such as David Foster, Josh Groban, Nita Whitaker, Lionel Richie, Dennis DeYoung, Cher, The Corrs, Chuck Berry, Marc Anthony, Brian McKnight, Jessica Simspon, Chic, Judy Collins, John Jennings, Jon Carroll, and Placido Domingo.
Margot tours primarily in the northeast both as a solo artist and with a full band. She has also been invited to participate on the DC Rockers for Life 2007 compilation that supports the non-profit Ground Control's campaign for drunk driving awareness. In addition Margot is contributing a portion of the proceeds from her new album, TORN, to Ground Control.
Margot remains socially active and also supports the non-profit Peace Drum with her music and is involved with DC Music for Relief. However Margot is only 15. She continues to evolve as an artist and is already at work on a new project with producer Marty Walsh in Boston. Stay tuned for new music and a new sound...
