Benny Mardones, nicknamed “The Voice” due to his near four-octave vocal range and soulful, passionate delivery, is storming the music scene once again with his first album of solely Mardones compositions in over 15 years.
Editorial review
Apart from some of the production and some wear on his voice, Let's Hear It for Love could easily be mistaken for an album Benny Mardones released in 1986 instead of one from 2006. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing, mind you: Mardones' success was built on "Into the Night," a moody soft rock single so good it was a hit twice in one decade, and his strength lies within the arena rockers and power ballads that make up this 12-song album. As the title gently suggests, this record is heavy on love songs, meaning that there are a lot of slow-crawling sentimental tunes that are nevertheless driven by big, cavernous drums straight out of the mid-'80s -- and when there's a change of pace, as there is on the grinding, slightly sinister-sounding Seger-esque rocker "Innocent Girl" or the surging Eddie Money duet "Let's Hear It for Love," it also sounds like a throwback to '80s album rock. When Mardones has the melodies -- as he does on the rockers and on the smooth "How Could I Love You More" and the relatively sprightly "Could We Fall in Love Again" -- this is enjoyable stuff for anybody who has a taste for either Mardones or the softer mainstream pop of the '80s. But the singer just as often gets bogged down in treacly, turgid emoting that will please his devoted fans but will turn away those casual fans who only know (and only love) "Into the Night." ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, All Music Guide

Benny Mardones, nicknamed “The Voice” due to his near four-octave vocalrange and soulful, passionate delivery, is storming the music scene once again with his first album of solely Mardones' compositions in over 15 years. Entitled "Let’s Hear it For Love", the new album is full of catchy hooks and melodic twists.
Mardones, has enjoyed an extremely successful twenty-five years as a songwriter and showman. He has shared the stage with Fleetwood Mac and the Rolling Stones, and has played alongside legends such as the Otis Redding band. In a Showtime tribute to rock icon Roy Orbison, Benny performed with the likes of Bob Dylan, John Fogerty, and Johnny Cash. Mardones’ ability to compose music that transcends generational gaps and typical pop-rock-r&b genre pigeonholes has much to do with his achingly honest lyrics and soulful delivery.
↓ more ↓As Rolling Stone quips, his “gloriously adolescent romanticism” appeals to all – regardless of age or musical background.
Pursuing a rigorous touring schedule over the years despite his recent diagnosis with Parkinson’s, Benny gathers his strength from his passion for performing and his adoring fans. He notes that, “There are days where I wonder if I am going to be able to use these vocal chords... if my legs are going to hold me up. But at this point in my life, my fans are almost family – they support me and they help keep me going. As long as they want to hear me sing, as long as they want to come to the shows… I will pour every last drop of myself into performing.”
Benny’s new eleven-song LP has been dedicated to his long time road manager and dear friend, Tommy Piraino, who passed away recently from leukemia. The song, “Just for you my friend,” which features a short appearance from Tommy’s son, was penned as Benny grieved. Says Mardones, “There are a number of extremely personal tracks on the album that I almost considered not including. But I realized that one of the reasons my friends and fans have been so supportive of me over the years, is that I refuse to hold back. You come to my shows or listen to my albums – you get 100% uncensored me.”
