This is contemporary worship re-imagined with a full swinging big band at the helm; think Frank Sinatra meets Matt Redman, or Vineyard arranged for Harry Connick Jr: it swings and sways and pulls you up to God via the dancefloor.
Bio / Background
This is a surprise - a British Big Band that really swings playing a collection of today's finest worship songs. It's worship music, but not as we know it!
The Marcus Green Big Band was formed in 2004 to experiment with using big band music in the contemporary worship scene. Band leader Marcus Green has led worship at St Aldate's Oxford, St Michael's Aberystwyth and with New Wine Cymru, as well as playing in the Holy Trinity Brompton (the Alpha Church) band; he has also sung with the Byron Jones Big Band, Wales' finest, and the world famous British big band The Syd Lawrence Orchestra. But now he has used all that experience to produce something we think is amazing.
Bringing together the finest jazz musicians from the small church that he pastors in South Wales, and combining them with some of the best professional jazz musicians in England, Marcus Green has created a unique worship album.
↓ more ↓It's Matt Redman meets Frank Sinatra, it's Vineyard as if arranged by Billy May, it swings and it sways and it pulls you up to God via the dancefloor.
Marcus himself takes most of the vocals with all the confidence of a guy whose life revolves aound these songs and this music. But there are also excellent guest spots from the pure-voiced Carolyn Turnidge, who also sang with Marcus' early 1990s band the Groove Heroes, and from Dove Award winner Tim Hughes on two of his own songs.
Tim Hughes first became part of the set up when Marcus spoke at Soul Survivor and Passion For Your Name conferences in England, as well as a lecture visit to Asbury Seminary in Kentucky, following the publication of Marcus' book on worship and the cross, Salvation's Song. The style was new for Tim, but the heart for worship was familiar, and that was what mattered. Plus, says Tim, "the musicianship is incredible!"
Track lsiting:
Jesus is the name we honour - a full on swinging bluesy version of the 1980s classic
Lord reign in me - hints of Basie and a stunning trombone solo from up-coming star, Al White
Surely - enter the strings, and the classical guitar of Dan Jones
Beautiful One - Tim Hughes guest vocals in a strutting arrangement of his own song, which also features a classy solo from Andy Greenwood, the essential big band trumpet player in the UK today
O the deep deep love of Jesus - a swinging jazz waltz arrangement of a classic Welsh hymn, with the pure vocal tones of classic Welsh songstress Carolyn Turnidge
Everything to me - just the rhythm boys accompany Marcus as he finds a perfect mid-tempo groove for his own song; check out Al White's trombone again in the second verse, and Andre Messeder's double bass solo right at the end!
Once Again - Dan Jones' fabulous strings arrangement of the great Matt Redman song
May My Heart - spine tingling brass smoothly slide their way through this intimate prayer
Shout to the Lord - a mellow jazz work out (with a passing nod to Norah Jones) of the Hillsongs anthem, again featuring Carolyn Turnidge
Whole World - Tim Hughes back duetting with Marcus in a cool reworking of his 2004 favourite
How Great Thou Art - a barnstorming swing featuring full band, strings and all three vocalists
To be in your presence - a surprising and gentle end, with some blissful piano playing from Ed Wiles, and a masterclass in brushwork from Mike Smith behind the kit.
Hear it, love it, let it swing your soul: there really is nothing quite like it.
